Lucille Martin was born December 1, 1923, in Kosciusko, Mississippi to the union of Jim Dote Kern and Harriett Dale Louise Dobbins. She was the fourth of eleven children. Her siblings are Willie Jane, Leo Lawrence, Earline, Mildred, Modean, James, Carl J., J.B., Ivray D., and Yvonnie.
Lucille was united in matrimony in 1945 to Mitchell Wright. To this union they were blessed with two children Billy Gene Wright and Edna C. Wright. Later in 1951, she remarried JC Martin. They remained together until his death in May 1998. To this union they were blessed with two children: Cute T. Martin and Dr. Sylvia Gail Martin.
Lucille attended Center Schools at Attala County in Mississippi. She was no stranger to hard work. In her early adult years, she relocated North and earned a living as a factory worker in Muskegon, Chicago and Milwaukee. With her move back to Mississippi, she would work as a preschool / head start teacher at Wesley United Methodist Church and later at CMC Head Start Program in Kosciusko. After having her four (4) children and her early start in teaching, she returned to school to earn her Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED) and her Associates of Arts (AA) Degree. She decided that she loved to learn and wanted to continue her education, so she enrolled in school to later earn her Bachelor of Art (BA) Degree from Tougaloo College and her Master of Art (MA) Degree from Jackson State University. She taught kindergarten at Thomastown Attendance Center and Williams Sullivan Attendance Center until her retirement from education. Lucille loved working with the youth. She felt the need to rescue as many children as she could during her teaching years.
Lucille "MoDear" as she was affectionately called by her loved ones was a woman of great conviction who spoke her mind. MoDear had a big personality and was always dressed to perfection. She had an amazing entrepreneurial journey and was well known as the smart, professional AVON lady. She also sold Stanley Home Products and Home Interior. She used this journey to teach, guide and train girls and women in the community on ways to supplement their income. Every year she maintained a vegetable garden which included apple and pear trees. She was well known for making soup stock, jellies, relishes, preserves and much more.
Lucille, in her early adult life, joined Traveler's Rest Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member and served on the Usher Board for many years. She was a loyal and hardworking member of the Building Fund Committee. Even after her health was failing, she continued to work and support the Building Fund committee, usually coming in as the top fund raiser annually. It was hard to say "no" to her when she "asked" for a donation for the building fund. She was a dedicated member of the Lion Star 601 OES-PHA Eastern Stars for over 45 years.
Lucille was granted her heavenly wings on Sunday, October 16, 2022, after 98 years of a blessed, beautiful and bountiful life. Her final days were surrounded by her family and loved ones.
