Obituary For Florida Lusk

Ms. Florida Eva Lusk was born March 20, 1930 in Attala County and raised in Goodman, MS. She is the daughter of the late Ivory Lusk Sr. and Hallie T Lusk and is the second oldest of three children. On the morning of Friday December 2, 2022, she quietly departed this life in the comfort of her home in Kosciusko, MS. She is preceded in death by her (Mother) Hallie Lusk, (Father) Ivory Lusk, Sr, and (Oldest Brother) Ivory Lusk Jr. Ms. Lusk parents instilled in her at an early age the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ which she carried throughout her entire life. During Ms. Lusk childhood, she and her siblings joined SpringRidge United Methodist Church, which was located on a dirt road not too far from her family home. She attended school in Attala and Holmes County. She received her High School diploma from Lanier High School in Jackson, MS. As a child Ms. Lusk parents believed that the mind was a terrible thing to waste therefore, she strived for excellence and nothing less. With hard work and determination Ms. Lusk received her bachelor's degree from Tougaloo College in 1951. However she didn't stop there, she later obtained a master's degree from Mississippi State University and continued her studies at Alcorn State University, Tuskegee Institute, and Prairie View College. During her time at Tougaloo College, she participated in many different clubs and extracurricular activities. In 1950 Ms. Lusk along with four other ladies chartered the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Nu Beta Chapter on the campus of Tougaloo College. Over the years, Ms. Lusk earned the name "Golden Zeta Dove". She was an active member of her sorority for over 70 years.

After graduating and leaving her footprint at her dear ole alma mater, she began her career. Ms. Lusk worked as a Home Economist for many years in Mississippi. She worked in Newton, Lauderdale, and Madison counties at the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Services which was also known as Cooking and Sewing. The program was offered to improve the living conditions of families, teach them about healthy food choices, housing, and money management. All which were aspects relating to family living. Ms. Lusk held many offices and served on local, state, and national committees. She was also a member of the Mississippi Home Economics Association as the treasurer. She later became an honorary member of the Mississippi and National Association Home Economist Family and Consumer Science; Honorary member of Epilow Sigma Phi; and Mississippi Home Economics Association.

Ms. Lusk worked with the 4-H Club and Home Maker Club in which she served through Mississippi University. Ms. Lusk also wrote in the black local newspaper in the "Memo Digest" owned by Mr. Robert Williams. During Ms. Lusk career, she moved to Meridian MS, where she joined the Saint Paul United Methodist Church Family. Ms. Lusk was an active and devoted member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church, where she worked in many positions such as an assistant adult women Sunday school teacher, member of the finance committee, and a member of the Stewardess Board. In 1985, after 30 rewarding years of service, MS. Lusk retired. Throughout her 30 years of service, she believed that helping families improve the living conditions for better health was the mission God had set forth for her. She often felt honored when people remembered her having helped them during crisis in their lives, such a managing finances. Ms. Lusk stayed on the move even after retiring through her weekly volunteer work at the Meridian Musuem of Arts and The Retired Senior Volunteer program for Lauderdale County Farm Bureau advisory Board. In Ms. Lusk spare time when she wasn't working or volunteering, she loved traveling. She even traveled to 43 states which also included Alaska, Canada, and Paris France. In 2017, Ms. Lusk decided to move back home closer to her family. She moved her membership and began attending Wesley United Methodist Church of Kosciusko, MS. Ms. Lusk enjoyed being amongst the congregation and hearing Wesley church choir sing. During the last moments of her life, she enjoyed visiting family, doing church work, and community service.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of family: Brother, Ike Lusk, Sr. (Sister-Bessie) of Goodman, MS; Niece Floretha Smith (James) of Kosciusko, MS; Niece, Addie Lusk of Goodman, MS; Niece Cynthia Lusk of Durant, MS; Ike Lusk Jr. (Sonji) of Chicago, IL; Curtis & Paul Lusk of Chicago, IL, and a host of devoted family and friends.
