AUGUSTA, GA-Mrs. Thelma Garrett White, 95, loving wife, mother and educator, passed away from natural causes at her home on Thursday, February 18, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. White, a U. S. Army veteran and member of the U. S. Postal Service.
Thelma Garrett White was born February 2, 1926, to the late George and Viola Garrett in Augusta. She attended the former Haines Institute, and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Paine College in 1948.
Throughout her life Thelma maintained an active relationship with the Haines Alumni Association and the Antioch Baptist Church. Thelma taught and inspired young minds as an elementary public school teacher for 30 years with the Richmond County School System. She taught primarily at Ursula Collins Elementary School and later at Bayvale Elementary School.
She leaves to carry on her legacy, a daughter, Rhonda White Madden (Thaddeus), of Maryland; two granddaughters, Dana Madden Dressel (Scott) and Erinn Madden Degnan (Brian), both of Maryland, and four great grandchildren, Piper and Carter Dressel and Colin and Owen Degnan.
Mrs. White is also survived by her beloved brother, Clarence Garrett of Michigan; a nephew, Rodney Garrett, also of Michigan, and a niece, Phena Ross, of California.
Public viewing will be Friday, February 26, 2021 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. from Southview Cemetery, 1102 Nellieville Road, Reverend Dr. K.B. Martin, eulogist. Social distancing will be observed and masks are required.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that donations be made to the Haines Alumni Association, Inc., P.O. Box 896, Augusta, GA 30903 in her memory. Haines Institute provided Mrs. White her first teaching opportunity upon graduation from Paine College.

Mrs. White was my 2nd grade teacher at Ursula Collins. She was always kind and sweet. I remember she lived across the street from the school.
