A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one’s birth. Ecclesiastes 7:1 April 30, 2019 at 10:54 a.m., Roosevelt Catchings transitioned to his place of eternal reward, free of earthly burdens and physical suffering, reuniting with his parents. Born to the late Howard D. and Corrine (Hicks) Catchings. Roosevelt entered life on March 24, 1941. He was the second and middle son and brother to Howard Douglas Catchings, Jr. (Danella) and Walter Lee Catchings (Bertha). Mr. Roosevelt Catchings attended Jim Hill High School after which he moved to Los Angeles, California. In 1961 (before moving to LA), he met the love of his life Sylvia Ann Cooper. They communicated via paper and pen until their lifelong union on December 31, 1969. They resided in California until August 1971. To this union, he had three girls: Kimvely Ray Catchings, Cinda Jevette Catchings and April Denise Catchings all of Jackson, Mississippi. His family was his pride and joy. Roosevelt was a husband and father that provided, encouraged and instilled excellence in his girls. Roosevelt was committed to his family and established a high bar as to the qualities of a good man. He was a pillar of strength, provider, and disciplinarian. His work was endless, goals where high, and heart forgiving; however, most importantly he understood and exhibited love. Roosevelt worked at Jackson State University from 1971-1993 with Campus Police. During this time, he always found time to commit to his passion of detailing cars. In 1993 he opened Metro Car Wash where he found joy in doing what he loved until he retired. Roosevelt was baptized as a young boy at St. Luther Baptist Church (Jackson, MS). Upon his return to Mississippi, he moved his fellowship to Morning Star Baptist Church 3420 Albermarle Road, Jackson, Mississippi. Roosevelt Catchings is survived by: his wife, three daughters, his brothers and their wives, grandchildren: Verbia Wesley (Kimvely), Cory Catchings (Cinda), Sylita Wesley (Kimvely), Jaemon Catchings (Cinda), Aaren Catchings (Cinda), Kendrick Catchings (April) and Morgan Catchings (Cinda), and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
God bless the Catchings Family: Howard introduced Lee and Freda to the Metro Car Wash where our cars were cleaned professionally to look new. We will always remember our experience talking and visiting with Roosevelt.
May the Lord give strength and comfort to my family in the loss of Roe. GOD bless and keep, ALWAYS. Love Lisa Catchings-Barre'
