Reuben Dorsey Mixon was the fourth child born to the loving parents of the late Diamond and Bettie Hunter Mixon on December 14, 1928 in Learned, MS.
As Reuben grew up , family and friends called him Dorsey. Most people thought that was his first name. Dorsey moved to Jackson, MS where he met the “Love” of his life, Luberta Howard. They were married January 7, 1947, and to this union three beautiful daughters were born: Betty, Jean, and Odessa.
Dorsey’s early years were spent in rural Hinds County. He was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church located between Welcome and Learned, MS. Later in life, he joined Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. He was an active member of 12-B Sunday School Class. Dorsey’s work history included working on the dock of Dixon Freight Line. Later he decided to open his own business. He owned and operated Mixon Phillip 66 Service Station at the corner of Lynch and Valley Street. He also operated the Afro Lounge on Lynch Street. While operating the lounge, he met the late Bruce Bennett who encouraged him to be a road distributor for Jax Distributors. After many years of working the Southern Region, he retired from the MS Warehouse. Dorsey was a dedicated husband and family man. He believed in education and loved Jackson State College. He always told his girls to stay in school, do your best. Dorsey departed this earthly life on January 13, 2022 at the Baptist Hospital with his family by his side. His great- grandson Shamar Moffett cared for him during that time. He was proceeded in death by his parents and four siblings: Odessa (Clarence) Lancaster, Vertis (Deborah) Mixon, Joseph, and Artrice (George) Champion. One son Willie (Blake) Veal, one great granddaughter, Tahja Morris and one special nephew, Fredrick Mixon. Dorsey leaves a legacy of faith, perseverance and love for his family and friends. Those left to enjoy his precious memory include his loving wife Luberta Mixon, four daughters, his brother Ernest (Diane) Mixon, 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grands, and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., Cade Chapel M.B. Church, 1000 W. Ridgeway Street, Jackson, MS 39213 with burial in Autumn Woods Cemetery, 4000 W. Northside Drive, Jackson, MS 39209.
