My deepest condolences to the Smith Family.
Dear Smith Family,
It is with a heavy heart that we write to express our deepest condolences on the passing of our beloved cousin Ken. His departure has left an emptiness in our hearts that words cannot fully express. Ken wasn't just family—he was a connection to a way of life that taught us invaluable lessons. Those precious days spent visiting him and his entire family in Terry, Mississippi over the years were some of the most formative experiences of our lives. I can still picture him in his element—a true Black cowboy, proud and dignified in a tradition that too few recognize or celebrate. Ken, you and your folk gave us some precious bragging rights. To this day, we toot that we are related to real Black cowboys. We are traumatized to hear of children stealing tractors for a joy ride... or folks who are told that they can't ride horses because of weight restrictions. Huh?
As children, how you and Cossandra handled the horses was a sight to see. (Pete (That's the name you game him, loved hanging out in Terry. He never wanted to leave. I thought you would get him with those baths. I recall Ruth in her sweet voice calling Pete to come bathe. It was shear entertainment watching her grab a fresh switch because he was not moving fast enough. I just knew he was going to jump into the car. Nahhhh. In spite of the threats, he didn't want to come back to Jackson with us :) Reality TV ain't got nothin on the Smiths!
The simple joys we shared remain vivid in our memories: riding horses across open fields, the satisfaction of picking berries and pecans under the Mississippi sun, gathering around for those incredible barbecues where the food somehow tasted better than anywhere else. But most of all, I cherish the laughter and conversations that flowed so easily between us despite our different lives.
Ken always got such a kick out of calling us his "city cousins," and we couldn't help but laugh along with him. (Is there a difference between a pop and cold drink?) What might have been teasing from someone else was a term of endearment from Ken—his way of acknowledging our differences while embracing our shared roots. Those days spent in Terry keep us humble and respectful to this day, grounding us no matter where life takes us.
Sharing spirituality at Terry Grove when there were no air conditioners in place was also a treasure we hold dear. The deep respect for God that permeated those gatherings connected us in ways that transcended our everyday differences.
The person we are today has been shaped in no small part by those memories with Ken. His connection to the land, his self-reliance, his quiet dignity, and his generous spirit continue to inspire us. Cousin, you are beautiful! Though he may no longer be with us physically, the wisdom and love he shared will never fade.
Please know that our thoughts are with the entire family during this difficult time. Ken's legacy lives on in all of us who were fortunate enough to know him and experience his unique spirit.
With love and deepest sympathy,
Theresa Crushshon and James Crushshon

Though his time here ended far too soon, I believe with all my heart that this was his homecoming. Heaven gained a soul full of kindness, strength, and grace. While we grieve the space he leaves behind, I hope we can also celebrate the beautiful truth that he is now resting in paradise, made whole and surrounded by glory.
