Rembering his life & Celebrating his legacy…..

Brother Anthony Ray Davis was born on a “Beautiful Monday” evening on January 4, 1960 to the late James & Mary Davis in Jackson, MS. He was also groomed and reared by the man we all loved and knew as the late Mr. Robert “Pop” Myles and wife Velma Myles. Anthony was a very smart & intelligent child. Anthony was raised in a very disciplined & God fearing village. A very vital part of his village was Mrs. Ruth Cook Sanders & her daughter Ms. Mary Lou Sanders at Cook Funeral Home which is where you could always find Anthony working to make a honest living. Anthony started his education journey through the Jackson Public Schools District. He obtained his elementary education at Isable elementary & middle school education at Blackburn middle school. He was a proud high school graduate of Jim Hill High School. Soon after graduation he matriculated on to attend Tougaloo College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Studies. He then obtained a Mster’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from “Thee I Love” Jackson State University. Anthony had a passionate love for Christ. Before his death, Anthony was a dedicated member of Farish Street Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev, Dr. Hickman Johnson. It was at the age of 9, Anthony joined the Black's Chapel M.B. Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Fred B. Black. It was there where his love and passion for music was founded. His first lessons were taught by Sister Grace Black. He was a Charter Member of the Black’s Chapel M.B which was organized in the year of 1968. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for over 30 plus years, Superintendent of Sunday school and one of the original members of the BTU. Anthony played a very vital role in starting the Blacks Chapel Day Care Center. Brother Anthony Davis was well known in his community through the funeral service industry. From an early childhood start in the business at Cook Funeral Home, even to his adulthood at Westhaven Funeral Home, he exemplified the epitome of funeral service. Anthony served faithfully as Treasurer of Westhaven Funeral Home since the inception in the year of 1996. He was a proud Licensed Funeral Director for over 40 plus years. Anthony loved to display top class dignified & professional funeral service to all families that he serviced. It was known among his staff that he would often say “Baby, we have ONE opportunity to get it right & this HAS to be perfect.” Not only did Anthony find a passion in the funeral industry he also had a love for educating the young. Anthony taught for many, many years at Siwell Middle School. He taught Music appreciation, Social Studies and several other subjects. Anthony was a firm believer in education. He would often say "You can take from me anything you please, but there are two things that cannot be taken away from me, and that's the love of Jesus, and my education. God blessed Anthony with many special gifts throughout his life. One of which many people afar and near admired Anthony for which was his love for music. He enjoyed playing the piano, the organ, singing and directing. Anthony played for many churches throughout his life. He was locally known for being the first musician to ever play for the renowned Westhaven Funeral Home Gospel Choir, Young Chapel C.M.E. Church, Black's Chapel M.B. Church, Mount Nebo M.B. Church, Greater Blair Street A.M.E Church, Pearl Street A.M.E., College Hill M.B. Church, Greater Clark Street M.B. Anthony also was a musician for the Jim Hill High School Band under the leadership of Mr. Beray Thigpen. Anthony was a very exuberant person who never met a stranger. Once he met you, then you were deemed “Baby” just like everyone else he knew. He was very instrumental in assisting students financially to attend his Alma Maters - Tougaloo College, Jackson State University and many other HBCU colleges nationwide. Anthony could always be found loving on the senior citizens in the community. If they ever were in need of anything and he wasn’t available, he would make sure that someone came to take care of the situation at hand. I just found out that my dear friend Anthony passed away. It's March 2024 and had I known, I would have gladly traveled to Jackson from Atlanta, Georgia to say good bye to this very special man. Anthony served our family with such pride and love. Assisting me in my dad and mother's funeral and giving me everything I needed to make their final moments special. He played for me for my aunt's funeral many years ago on an impromtu notice, and when my mom asked, how much for accompanying my daughter, his answer was...no charge. This was a special man of whom was the epitome of amazing. Rest in peach and enjoy the angels my friend. Until we meet again. Thanks so much King. ~Ada

Anthony I remember you growing up as being the "informer" to your mom about the whereabouts of your sister Kat & me. You would tail us in the shadow of the bushes to see where we were going in order to inform Ms. Mary. We would throw things @ you to make you go home. When I told you about this a few years ago you were awed by it with delight, to know you gave Kat & me a hard time being teenage girls. Anthony, "inform" GOD of two GOOD ladies, your sister Kat & me, & save us a spot.🙏🏿44DC
