Mary Lynne Gay Breeding was born in Eton, Georgia on April 20, 1932 and was the only child of Esther Nette and C. T. Gay.
After graduating from Emery Street School in the 11th grade, Mary enrolled into Clark College in Atlanta, GA. In 1952, she graduated from Clark with a Bachelor of Science in Education and later on that year she fell in love and married another Clarkite, William James Breeding, Sr. The following year, Mary began her teaching career in Greene County. That same year she gave birth to her daughter Katrina L. Breeding. Then six years later, she had her son, William James Breeding, Jr. She also received a Masters and sixth year certificate from the University of Georgia. During her teaching career, Mary received many professional honors such as Greensboro Teacher of the Year for years 68-69', 73-74', and 87-88'. She was also awarded with the State Home Economics teacher of the year in 81-82' and Local Star Teacher of the Year in 87-88'.
Mary was an active member in several honors and professional associations such as; the National Home Economics Association, the Georgia Home Economics Association, Georgia Vocational Teacher's Association, Georgia Teachers Educational Association and the Georgia Association of Educators and Retired Teachers. She was selected to be a member of the Education Honors Society.
For many years she was active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She was a lifelong member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a charter member of the local chapter, Lake Oconee Area Alumnae.
Mary contributed numerous years of service to the youth of Greene County as an advisor to the Future Homemakers of America, Teens Taking Control, DelTeens and the Tri-Hi-Y.
As a member of Siloam Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years, she taught Sunday school classes and worked with the Vacation Bible School. She, like her mother, is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
In her free time Mary enjoyed sewing, decorating, ceramics, decoupage, flower arranging and shopping.
Preceding her in death was her husband William James Breeding, Sr.
She leaves behind her two children, Attorney Katrina L. Breeding and William James Breeding, Jr. (Vivian L. Breeding) Five grandchildren, Charles Breeding, Corrin Breeding, Kalyn Breeding, Aleeah Breeding, Vivian C. Breeding and one great grandchild, Akiyrey Breeding as well beloved caregivers, Cathy Rowland and Joann Jackson, cousins Kate Lynn Kemp and Roberta McClure and other relatives whom she loved dearly.
