Obituary For Johnnie Comer Champion

Johnny Comer Champion, affectionately known as “Comer,” was born in Siloam, Georgia on May 16, 1941 to the late Roosevelt Sr. and Doshie M. Champion. He was the seventh of fourteen children. Comer transitioned peacefully at home in Greensboro, Georgia with his family and “devoted” friend Roberta Thomas by his side. Comer was educated at the School for the Deaf in Cave Springs, GA.

Comer joined Wheat Street Baptist Church in Atlanta where he became a faithful and dedicated member of the Deaf Ministry. The Mighty Men of Wheat Street honored him on Men’s Day by naming him “Man of the Year” in 2013.

Comer was employed by Carl Clyde’s Dry Cleaners for several years. Afterwards he went to work at Morehouse College as a Custodian. After moving back home, he gained employment with Chipman Union in Union Point, GA as a member of the Janitorial services until it closed.

Comer was preceded in death by his brothers Roosevelt Champion Jr., Hosea Champion, John Champion and sisters Thelma Henderson, Roseann Jones, Essie Corry and Louise Stonum.

Comer’s life will be cherished by his very dear and loving friend of 34 years, Roberta, and his four children Derrick (April), Comer Jr., Adrienne (aka Shay) and Terrance; seven grandchildren: Ja’Derika, Terrica, Derrick Jr., Janai, Terrance Jr., Marquis and Kinzley; two great-grandchildren: Quayshun and Quandarius: brothers: Noel (Lubertha) Champion and Kenneth Champion, both of Greensboro, GA.; sisters: Ann Russell of Decatur, GA, Willie Mae Williams of Union Point, GA, and Jackie Dunn of Greensboro, GA.; an aunt: Ruby Coven of Atlanta, GA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


Service: Saturday, June 29, 2024 from the First Methodist Church 4741 Carey Station Road Greensboro GA at 12pm.
