Obituary For Joanne Callaway Jackson

Joanne was the second born to Martha Ann Robinson Callaway and Boise Callaway. She entered the world on June 23, 1948. A Greene County native, Joanne learned the responsibilities of maintaining a home and nurturing family. She often spoke of how she worked to help her family from a young age. Life dealt her more than a few blows. She recalled how she would walk into the woods and pray. She built a relationship with Jesus before she joined the church. She testified her faith is what got her through. She attended the local public school and dreamt of becoming a restauranteur. She joined Randolph Baptist Church, serving faithfully on the worship team and in any compacity needed.

She bore six children: Melissa Smith (Alton), Emmanuel Callaway, Marcella Callaway, Cora Goss, Vickie Goss and Valisha Goss. A single mother, she often worked long hours at multiple jobs to support the family. She instilled a strong work ethics into each of her children. She would always impart counsel by way of wise sayings and demonstrations. One of favorite sayings was, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” She lived a life of service and giving often, feeding other families and sharing what she had. She put her hands to work as a seamstress, sitter, homecare service provider, textile worker and cook. She is known for her southern meals, opening her door and inviting all who would come and sup at the table.

She was blessed to see four generations! She found joy in the family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren: Renata Lawrence Willingham (Byron), Renee Smith, Ralphon Callaway, Emmanuel Cook (Kelly), Briata Alatise (Abiola), Shanique Walker, Jaylen Sneed, Aniya Johnson, Immanuel Peek, Jaleisha Goss and Jayden Goss; great grandchildren: Omar, Kaliah, Bryson, Alani, Jaylen, Jr., Solana, Josiah and Genesis Callaway, Karson and Saint Cook, Carter and Rosie Alatise.

Siblings: Rachel, Howard and Raleigh Callaway; grandchildren: Lei and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. The word of the Lord was in her mouth and heart. She would quote scriptures and would encourage others with the Word of God. A praying woman, she testified that she knew that God was with her. Through toil, turmoil, sickness and pain – She believed and spoke of taking her final rest in the Lord. On August 26, she departed this life. She is preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Boise and siblings: Tommy, Boise Jr., Douglas, David, Mary Ann, Ernestine, Ricky and William Ralph Callaway.

Services: Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from Randolph Baptist Church, Union Point, Ga. with Pastor Donald Harris, Officiating.
