Bernice Jones Byrd, affectionately known as “Ninny,” was born on January 26, 1939, in Forsyth Monroe County, GA, to the parents of the late Mr. Robert Lee Jones and the late Mrs. Minnie Mae Jordan Jones. Sadly, Bernice lost her parents at a young age, but she found solace and love in the care of her maternal aunt, Morriszell “Pidgeon” Jordan O'Neal. She received her education within the Lamar County School System at Barnesville Industrial School.
In the bonds of Holy Matrimony, she was united with the late James Albert Byrd; and their union was blessed with seven children. Bernice was a dedicated and nurturing mother, fostering a Christian upbringing for her children.
Throughout her life, Bernice explored various job opportunities, acquiring a multitude of skills, but her true passion was culinary arts. Her warm and welcoming home was always open, ensuring everyone who entered was met with a delicious meal and words of encouragement. Her professional journey included roles at Montclair Furniture Company (Smith Shop), Lamar County Department of Family and Children Services, and the Lamar County Day Care.
At an early age, Bernice became a member of the Sardis Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served until her health declined. Her devotion to God, her family, and her church community was unwavering. As a mother, she was resolute in raising her children within the church.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Robert Lee Byrd and Terrell Tyrone Byrd; and a son-in-law, James T. Dumas. On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, God sent his angel to tell Bernice that everything was now ready for her. Her spirit took flight, and she went home to rest from her labor.
Bernice leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love to her survivors including her devoted children, Bernell Byrd Merritt, Carolyn Byrd Davis, James Harold (Brenda) Byrd, Christopher Byrd, and Michelle Byrd Dumas; siblings, Reverend Nazareth Lyons, Tony O'Neal, Mildred Barber, Margaret (Larry) Fluellyn; sister-in-law, Carolyn Bland O'Neal; eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchildren, a daughter-in-love, Patsy K. Mann; and her memory is further celebrated by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
