Ms. Annie Mae Harris, beloved, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend was born on October 18, 1941. She was born to the late Berner Eugene Harris and the late Lucy Mae Castlin. On Tuesday, November 19, 2019 God sent his angles to quietly bring his love on home. Annie Mae was educated in the Lamar County School System. She retired from the American National Insurance Company as well as the City of Barnesville. There she served on the Barnesville City Council for many years. She was a person that enjoyed life and had a fun, loving spirit. She never met strangers! Early in life, Annie Mae joined Sand Hill CME Church. She later changed her membership to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Flovilla, GA. There she served under Rev. James Smith, her son. She loved the Lord, her church, and her church family. Her legacy will be carried on in the hearts of 3 children. 1 loving and devoted daughter Ms. Devy Harris-Hall of Jackson, GA, Two sons, Mr. Kenneth Smith of Jackson, GA, and Rev. James (Angela) Smith of Milner, GA. 8 Grandchildren; Mr. Artez (Violette) Harris of Union City, GA, Mr. Michael Harris of College Park, GA, Mr. Marcus Harris of Dallas, TX, Mr. Antonio Smith of Riverdale , GA, Ms. Brittanie Smith of Barnesville, Mr. Aundray Harris of Jackson, GA Mr. Justin Smith, of Milner, GA, and Mr. Jordan Smith of Milner, GA. 18 Great-grandchildren. She leaves behind two sisters, Ms. Cora Fambro of Barnesville, GA and Shelia Lovelace(Thomas) of Stockbridge, GA. 3 brothers Mr. Terrance (Severa) Lovelace, Mr. Leonard Lovelace, all of Barnesville, GA, and SSG Kenneth (Pamela) Lovelace of Hampton, VA. Ms. Annie also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Ms. Annie Harris is the former businessowner of “Annie’s North Hill Quick Stop” in Griffin, GA, a substitute teacher for Lamar and Spalding Counties, retired Insurance Agent and retired City of Barnesville Council woman. Ms. Annie Harris is the 1st and only Black woman to serve on the Barnesville City Council. She was elected in November 2, 1987, sworn in January 1988 and served 12 years and 9 months on the City Council. She persevered through often difficult times and circumstances in her determination to carry out her duties. She was instrumental in the fulfillment of many progressive plans inaugurated by the Barnesville City Council.
She presented resolutions to the City Council to start recognizing Martin Luther King’s Birthday and to change the name of 10th Street in honor of Mr. Carey (Tiny) Buckner. She also voted for the Civic Center, the Police Station and the Fire Station to be built; just to name a few. Ms. Annie completed The Harold F. Holz Municipal Training Institute for elected officials at the University of Georgia in Athens. She also attended the Georgia Academy for Economic Development in Newnan, Georgia and successfully completed the Regional Economic and Leadership multi-session program. Ms. Harris has received numerous awards for her outstanding work in the community. She served in several leadership positions in the NAACP and the Coalition of Women. Annie was a Red Hatter and Founding member of the Skylark Social Club and the Barnesville High and the Industrial/Booker Schools Alumni Association, Inc. She received a Certificate of Appreciation in Recognition of Outstanding Community Service from Xi Beta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a Certificate of Dedicated Service in the Community from the Lamar County NAACP.
