Mrs. Clara Lou Pennyman passed on June 22, 2023.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 from 12:00PM until 4:30PM at Trice Funeral Home In Thomaston.
Celebration Of Life will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at 1:00PM at Friendship Baptist Church located 679 Walton St. Thomaston, GA.
Mother Clara Lou Worthy Pennyman was born April 1, 1932, to the late Mrs. Clyde Garland Worthy and the late Mr. Lester Worthy in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia. She was he sixth of nine children. Her parents and seven of her siblings preceded her in death. Mother Pennyman was educated in the public schools of Upson County and attended Collins School.
She confessed Christ at the age of 12v and joined the Gatlin AME Church. Later in life, she joined Friendship Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Busy Bee Club, a former member of the choir, a ward captain, a member of the culinary committee, and later served on the Mother's Ministry. She attended church and served faithfully until her health failed.
Clara was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Charlie T. Pennyman on February 13, 1949. Their union was blessed with seven children. Two daughters, Annie Clyde Pennyman Brown and Cynthia Marie Pennyman McNear preceded her in death. She was a devoted wife, and mother. They shared forty-eight years until his passing on August 20, 1997.
Clara became acquainted with many people, because she was well known for her twelve-layer chocolate cake she baked for many years. Some people have tried but could not duplicate the taste of her cake. She was a great baker. She baked cakes and pies for people far and near. She was known by many as the “Cake Lady.” Everyone loved her desserts, both black and white requested them. In her leisure time, she loved to travel, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, spending time with the Rainbow Club, collecting bereavement money on her street from the neighbors. Like her mother, she also had a gift of using heat and her hands to heal sprained ankles. Clara Lou was a lively and classy lady. She loved to dress in the finest of fashion. She loved her hats, shoes and Cadillacs.
She was preceded n death by her parents; he husband; two children; four brothers, Walter Worthy, Jr., M.C. Worthy, Willie Clyde Worthy, and Johnny Will Worthy; three sisters, Willie Ruth Williams, Annie Louise Prater, and Nettie Mae King. On Thursday, June 22, 2023, the Lord called her name. She peacefully answered the call and went home to rest. She will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends who knew and loved her.
Clara leaves to cherish her memory, five children, Willie James (Danita) Pennyman and Calvin (Dorothy) Pennyman of Thomaston, GA, Carol Y. (Joe) Gibson of Yatesville, GA, Teresa (Min. Jeffery) Graddick of Griffin, GA. and Ralph Lamar Pennyman of Thomaston, GA; seventeen grandchildren, thirty- three great- grandchildren and twenty great- great-grandchildren; one brother, Andrew Worthy of Thomaston, GA; two sons-in-laws, Rena McNear of Macon, GA and Leon Brown of Augusta, GA; sister-in-law, Joann Worthy of Melbourne, FL, Nettie Ruth Johnson of Hollywood, FL, Maggie Bentley of Yatesville, Ga. Annie Grace Pennyman and Jimmie Lee Pennyman of Thomaston, GA; brothers-in-law, Olin Pennyman of McDonough, GA and Walter Webb of Musella, GA; a devoted niece, Linda Ann Kendall; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Trice Funeral Home will be in charge of all arrangements.
