Obituary For Mr. Powell Thornton

Mr. Powell Thornton was born to the late Mrs. Annie Mae Worthy and Mr. Joseph H. Thornton on May 13, 1944 in The Rock, GA. His early years of education were in the Upson County School System, where he attended the Thomaston Training School and Drake High School. Powell’s commitment to Christ began at an early age when he joined the Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. During his young adulthood, he joined the United States Army in June 1963, where he received many rewards and medals. Most notably, he received the Marksman (Tank Weapons); the Sharpshooter (Rifle M-1); and the most prestigious of them all, an Honorable Discharge. Powell’s work history consists of employment with the Brumbelow Monument Company in the 1960s; Clark Memorials, Inc in the 1980s; and Crown Manufacturing in Thomaston, GA, where he received many awards for loyalty and dedication through the years. Powell was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, James Thornton, Bill Thornton, Sylvester Thornton, and Celeste Thornton; and four sisters, Ada Daniel, Lucinda Character, Lilly B. Walker, and Jeannie Holland. On Sunday, July 19, 2020, the earthly life of Mr. Powell Thornton ended and eternal life began. Powell leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 59 years, Mrs. Laurine Thornton; seven children, Mrs. Shelia (Marvin) Walker, Ms. Debra (Jerome) Thornton, Ms. Janice Strickland, Ms. Gloria Ann Thornton, Mr. Jermaine (Lakesha) Thornton all of Thomaston, GA, Mr. Randall Hill of Cleveland, OH and Ms. Cathy Banks of CA; seven grandchildren, Manuel, Marcus, Whitney, Malcolm, Karliya, Malik and Brayden; one great-grandchild, Karter; one great-aunt, Mrs. Minnie Ola Worthy of Thomaston, GA; six sisters-in-law, Mrs. Laverne Flowers, Mrs. Eleve (Lonnie) Wilder, Ms. Cynthia (Robert) Walker all of Thomaston, GA; Ms. Annie Maude Furlow of Cleveland, OH, Mrs. Jean Thornton and Mrs. Mattie Thornton both of Atlanta, GA; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Larry (Clementine) Parker and Mr. Harry Parker both of Thomaston, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
