Dr. George A. Olivier, Jr. Ph. D. passed on Sunday, September 25, 2022. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Trice Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethel Baptist Church. Interment will be held in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Olivier, Sr., and Ethel Ripoll Olivier. He married Linda Smith on December 28, 1999, in Sevierville, Tennessee. He was proud member of the 1966 graduating class of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. In 1970, he received a B.A. degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Dillard University in New Orleans. In 1970, he was acknowledged as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. It was during his years at Dillard University that he developed a deep love of the Spanish language and culture. The desire to learn Spanish did not end there. He continued his preparation for the classroom by earning a master’s degree in Spanish Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign and a Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. While at Purdue, Dr. Olivier also studied French language and culture. Dr. Olivier was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and proudly served his country from 1971 to 1973, He was honorably discharged in March of 1973. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal during his term of service. Upon leaving the military, Dr. Olivier joined the faculty of his alma mater Dillard University. Dr. Olivier was an assistant professor of Spanish and French at Dillard from 1973 to 1987. During this period, Dr. Olivier was also a part-time member of the faculty of Southern University in New Orleans, where he taught French and World Literature. Dr. Olivier moved to Barnesville, Georgia, in 1987 to accept a position with the Lamar County schools, where he taught Spanish and French, until 2008. Beyond that, he became a mentor to many of the youth of this community. For many of them, his mentorship has continued into adulthood. He was given an Athletic Service Award for 1991-92. He was recognized as Star Teacher in 2002.Dr. Olivier also worked as a Spanish teacher at Griffin’s Evening High School from 1998-2006. After retiring from the Lamar County schools in 2008, following twenty-one years of dedicated service, he accepted a position as a Spanish teacher at Mary Persons High School in Forsyth, Georgia, for the 2008-2009 school year. In 2008, he was presented a plaque by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in appreciation of thirty-four years of service in education. Dr. Olivier also served as an adjunct professor of Spanish at Clayton State University and Gordon State College. He was a member of the faculty of St. George’s Episcopal School. Dr. Olivier finished his forty-eight-year teaching career while serving as a member of the faculty of Rock Springs Christian Academy. He was embarking on his 49th year when his health failed. Survivors include: his wife. Linda Smith Olivier; son, George Olivier III of New Orleans, LA; granddaughter, Gabriella Marguerite Olivier of New Orleans, LA; sister, Jill Antee of New Orleans, LA; half -sibling, Tamico Casey of New Orleans, LA; two sisters-in-law, Betty Smith Banks (Clifford) and Elaine Woods (Andrew); one brother-in-law, Michael A. Smith; a devoted cousin/ traveling partner, Judy (Norman) Robinson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as friends and former students
