Deacon Lonnie Walker was born on May 26, l943, to the late Mrs. Annie Mae Hutcherson Walker and the late Mr. Olden Walker in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia. He was educated in the public school of Upson County and attended the early years of Drake High School.
At an early age, he joined the Welcome Grove Baptist Church. After the church family saw his dedication in the church, he was soon ordained as a deacon and later Chairman of the Deacon Board. He was a faithful member to the church and the pastors and he supported them as long as he was able. His dedication to the church was an example to all the deacons that followed him.
When he reached manhood, as most men during his time, he went to work in the Mills. He began working in the Peerless Mills. He was a dedicated and faithful employee and worked his way up to the position of a supervisor. In addition to the mills, he was a skilled mechanic.
In his early adult years, he met Ms. Ida Mae Character. They were joined in marriage on July 25, l965. To this union three children were born. One daughter preceded them in death. He was a faithful husband and a good provider for his family. He set an example for his sons. He and Ida shared fifty-seven years of marriage until her passing on February 26, 2022.
During his leisure time, he enjoyed going to church, visiting other churches, working on cars and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Oscar Walker and his wife, Ida. On Sunday, October 27, 2024, the Lord called his name. He answered the call and went home to his Heavenly Father. He will be greatly missed by his family, church family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons, Mr. Lonnie LeRay (Jean) Walker of Thomaston, GA and Mr. Spencer (Korona) Walker of Katy, TX; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, Mr. Jessie (Carol) Character and Mr. Stanley (Debra) Character both of Thomaston, GA and Mr. Hiram Character of Conyers, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
