Obituary For Vernon Wayne Williams

Vernon Wayne Williams was born June 27th, 1956, to the late Henry “Spooney” Macon and Ermatine Williams. He departed this earthly home on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, at WakeMed, surrounded by his loved ones.

Vernon, or Wayne as he was mostly known, received his early education at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, graduating in 1975. After deciding the farm life wasn’t his future he enlisted into the Army in 1976. He served his country from 1976 to 1982. After an honorable discharge, he remained active in the Army Reserve while embarking on a career with the City of Raleigh Streets and Maintenance Department. After 18 years of service, he decided to pursue his dreams as an entrepreneur and open Williams Tree Service. He specialized in difficult tree removals and worked all over North Carolina. He provided jobs for his community and services even when people were unable to afford them. His labor of love was passed down throughout his family, especially to his youngest daughter. He loved to fish and hunt but his greatest passion was having his family and friends around for a fish fry or a barbecue with the music playing, dancing and just shooting the breeze.

Wayne was married to Debra Ann Williams. He was preceded in death by his only son, Rodney Shawn Melatt. He leaves to cherish his legacy: three daughters, Jennifer Lynn Vick, Latasha Denise Smith, and Wanett Tamara Mims; one son-in-law, Christopher Mims; 10 grandchildren, Jamal Gray, Keara Melatt, Quamar Melatt, Jada Melatt, Destinie Vick, Samantha Smith, Andrea Smith, Kennedy Mims, Madison Mims, and Christopher Mims, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Cameron Gray, Levi Gray, Lexington Gray, Jonah Lucas, and Aniyah Bell; one brother, Gary Mic Williams, and one sister-in-law, Lavette Williams; one nephew, Anthony T. Williams; one niece, Ashlee N. Williams; uncle, Harold, and aunt, Doris Williams; cousins, Shirley Hunter, Linda Hinnant, Leotis Williams, Robin Burton, Anthony Williams, Jackie Mangum, Shelia Smith-Perkins, Vicky Rogers, Fran Baker, Terry Smith, Reginald Williams, Bernard Taylor, Peter Taylor, Mary Hodge, and John Williams; and cousins on his father’s side, Bishop Gerald Sylver and Donna Sylver.
