Monica Lynn Brooks Young was born June 8, 1969, in Charlotte North Carolina to James Phillip Brooks and Peggy Jackson Patterson. At an early age, she attached herself to the wisdom and guidance of her two grandmothers (Ollie Shuford Myers) and (Geraldine Wilson Jackson). She referred to them as her (“TWO G’S”). Her siblings are James Love (Lil Jimmy), Timothy Brooks (Tim), and Cynthia Bradford (Cyndi). “Dr Monica” was educated in the Mecklenburg County School System, graduating from Garinger High School in 1987. It was at Garinger High School where she met her future husband, Ricardo Young. Monica and Rick were married in 1991 and raised three anointed and blessed children D’Aundre, Simone, and Janae. As a military family, they traveled to several states (including Hawaii) as well as Japan and Korea. Monica held down the duties of military wife, mother, supervisor, full-time student, nurse, prayer warrior, AAU basketball mom, drill sergeant, and much, much more when Rick deployed to the Middle East. Monica cherished and constantly bragged about her four grandchildren (Chance, Aundrea, Harmony, and Emir).
Her educational endeavors of five degrees include: Bachelor of Science, Marketing (NC A&T State University 1991), Master of Science, Middle Grades Education (Fort Valley State University, GA 1996), Masters of Divinity (MDiv/Doctorate in Ministry), Norfolk Theological Seminary (Norfolk, VA 2009) and finally, a clinically based and accredited MDiv (Campbell University 2023). Monica became a follower of Christ in 1992 and NEVER looked back. She was truly a prophet, teacher, and woman after the Heart of Jehovah. She led many to the Lord and was an ordained Elder, Youth Pastor, and Superintendent of Christian Education.
Monica’s professional and spiritual passion combined during a hospital Chaplain Internship at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C. in 2013. That was followed up with a Hospital Chaplain residency and eventual full-time position as the Advance Care Planning Coordinator at Wake Med Raleigh Hospital (2014-2023). She THRIVED in a Level 1 Trauma Center in South East Raleigh during the height of the Corona-19 Virus, and found time to author a book titled “Oil in My Lamp” published in 2022! Her book currently sells on Amazon, Goodreads, and Kindle. Her heart has always been to “Give a voice to the unheard” and has always championed and rooted for the underdog, the underserved, and the invisible.
Monica leaves to celebrate her life and legacy: Husband of 32 years, Rick Young, son, Dre Ervin of Gastonia, NC; daughter, Simone Keith (Marcus) of Raleigh, NC; daughter Janae Young of Fuquay Varina, NC. Four grandchildren Aundrea, Harmony, Emir, and Chance. Her parents, Peggy and Leroy Patterson of Charlotte and James and Nancy Brooks of Charlotte. Her brother James Love of (Gastonia), brother Timothy (Tim) Brooks of Charlotte, and sister Cynthia Bradford of San Antonio, Texas. Pray for you all! From bro bob and his wife Deborah...
Hi this is Bob smith and his wife Deborah met sis Monica at greater love !! I pray for the family hey bro Rick.
I met Monica when she was a chaplain at WakeMed. She was beautiful inside and out. She always greeted me with a smile and was so very pleasant. Her brightness and kindness as a person was even reflected in her dress with the beautiful and vibrant colors she wore. She rests in God's arms. It is so very hard for you all I know, but know we have you all in prayer. Hazel Covington .
Monica and I had the pleasure of meeting and connecting at WakeMed several years ago. She was such an inspiration to our entire team and often provided support through prayer, blessing of hands and/or words of comfort to my team during huddles or staff meetings. My condolences, thoughts and prayers are offered to the family and friends. May the Lord comfort all hearts as she rests in peace.
Kind regards, Rhonda Long & family

To the Young family, my deepest heartfelt sincere condolences for your loss. Going down memory lane when I first met Monica is when my son married Janae. Monica was a mother that did not bite her tongue when it came to her daughter, and granddaughter. What I knew of Monica she loved God, Family, helping people, and loved her dogs. Harmony would tell me about the dogs during my Face Time with her. Young family, hold on to Gods unchanging hands, continue to support and love each other. Keeping you all in prayer. God Bless Francine and Family
From all of us who had the privilege of working alongside Monica, our deepest condolences go out to her family during this difficult time. Monica was a cherished "unofficial" member of our Inpatient Palliative Care Team, and her warmth, kindness, dedication, and spunk will be dearly missed. May Monica's memory always be a blessing to those of us fortunate to know her. -Transitions LifeCare Palliative Care Team
I met Monica a couple of years ago prior to the Pandemic she enjoyed what she was doing in helping people in the hospital. She was a great inspiration to the people who she came in contact with. Rest In His Presence.
Monica has left such a profound legacy for all who knew her to remember and strive in many ways to live up to. I worked and got to know her at WakeMed; she was an exemplar for many, a Christian woman serving GOD in word and deed. I'll always remember our conversations about Campbell and her family. Positive, insightful and always encouraging...Heaven surely has gained an Angel. I will continue to pray for family and friends knowing she is safe within GOD's arms protected, at peace and loved. I Love you Monica! Debra F. Robinson-Spann
Sending my deepest sympathy and love to family and friends of Mrs. Monica. We met at work a simple conversation regarding a dress turned into an amazing friendship. When she walks in the room, she owns it! From us laughing, praying and doing our doggy talks is something that I will truly miss. Sincerely, Sonya Avery
