On Thursday, April 30, 1942, in Alpine, Alabama, John Thomas Stamps and Marie Estelle (née Smoot) Stamps welcomed a son, John Thomas Stamps, Jr.
At an early age, the Christian foundation was laid for Mr. Stamps at Mt. Zion Christian Methodist Episcopal Church that lasted a lifetime. As a member, John served as a member of the Steward Board, Trustee Board, laity, Ministry to Men and sang with the choir and male chorus. John was a graduate of R. R. Moton High School and matriculated at Alabama A & M University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1962 during his time at Alabama A & M University, John became a member of the Delta Gamma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He continued his education earning a Master of Science degree from the University of Montevallo and an Educational Specialist degree from the University of Alabama.
William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” For over 40 years a fire was lit in Mr. Stamps to educate and mentor the youth in both the schools of Talladega City and Talladega County. Civically he served as a Coosa Valley Co-op Trustee for 28 years, was a member of The Gideons International and was a lifelong member of the Talladega County Alabama A & M University Alumni Chapter.
On August 26, 1969, John took the hand of the former Doris Jean Cole in holy matrimony and their union was blessed with three children. His time at home was filled with spending time with their family, but he enjoyed yardwork, volunteer work, watching sports, studying God’s word and attending HBCU games particularly those of his beloved Alabama A & M University.
Mr. Stamps was the devoted husband of Doris J. Stamps for over fifty-four years; nurturing and proud father of John T. “Ivan” Stamps, III of Hoover, Alabama, Julian (Lutisia) Stamps of Kansas City, Missouri and Alice M. Stamps of Atlanta, Georgia; doting grandfather of Chloe Hines and Alexandria Stamps; caring uncle of Rolan Talmadge Wooden, Trevor Maurice Wooden and Jeramy Walter Wooden; and loving Godfather to James Morris, Jayla Morris and Kyler Griffin; and beloved family member and friend to a host of many others.
On the evening of June 15, 2024, the once bright light that was John T. Stamps, Jr. shown no more. He was preceded in passing by his parents, John T. and Marie E. Stamps; two brothers, Jay W. Wooden and Walter Stamps; and an adopted brother, Eric Chatman.
