William Joe Lewis, affectionately known as “Joe”, was born on May 5, 1937 in Eufaula, AL to the late Rev. William Lewis and the late Mary Smith Lewis . Following the unfortunate death of his mother, he was reared by Rev. William and Cynthia Lewis. To this union five children were born. He was a loving son, husband and father.
Joe traded in his cross for his crown and transitioned from labor to his eternal resting place, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at his home.
Joe had a heart for gospel music. He was one of the founders of the Singing Angels and sang with the group for over fifty years traveling throughout the United States. He had a love for “antique cars”, which was evident by his large vintage classic car collection. Another pastime that he enjoyed was fishing. In his early years, he was a barber and vegetable salesman and was fondly known to many as the “Watermelon/Potato Man”. Joe retired from American Buildings after thirty-five years of service.
At a young age Joe accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined Tabernacle Baptist Church, Eufaula, AL. Later in life he united with First Missionary Baptist Church of Georgetown, GA. He was a dedicated church member until his health began to decline. He was educated in the Barbour County School System.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Lewis, Mary Smith Lewis and Cynthis Lewis; his wife, Lillie Lewis; brother, Donald Lewis Champ Lewis and John Henry Lewis; sister, Joanne Daniels; daughter, Lisa Adgerson; son, William Joe, Jr., and grandson, Jerome Lewis, Jr.
Joe will be dearly missed by his loved ones. He leaves to cherish loving memories a loving family including eight children, Lorenzo Jerome Lewis, Gloria (James) Thomas, Mary Dennis, Jacqueline F. Calloway all of Eufaula, AL; Nathaniel Lewis of Washington, DC, Victoria Berry of Willingboro, NJ, Lillie (Bobby) Gilbert and Harold Lewis all of Eufaula, AL; son-in law, Calvin Adgerson of Forestville, MD; 24 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren; his loving significant other, Ms. Annie Dale Brown and two very special friends, Mr. Berry Forte and Pastor James Allen, a verydear cousin, Janie Devose and a host of other relatives and friends.
