He was a sports official for over 30 years and he also served his country in the US ARMY for more than 10 years, and was honorably discharged from service in He married his wife Nina, the love of his life, in August of 1980, who survives him.

Wilbur was known for his outgoing personality and his love for sports. He loved football, basketball, and baseball. And during his life he got to see his favorite baseball team of all time, The Atlanta Braves, win the World Series. He was truly a family man, and enjoyed having all of his grandkids together. Wilbur was also a God fearing man and loved the Lord with all his heart. He loved attending church, and speaking of all the good God had done for him and his family. He knew his heart was right with God and reminded his family and friends of that daily. He is in our hearts and we know that we will see him again.
My deepest sympathy and condolences to Wilbur's family. I had the pleasure of working alongside him as a high school football official when he was with our association based in Auburn-Opelika. He was a great guy and always had a chipper attitude. Away from the field, he was someone I was happy to call a friend. I'll never forget my visit to Carver Park in Columbus and hearing his vision for stocking the pond there and have fishing rodeos for the kids and other activities. He was always eager to give back. We've lost a good one. Nina and the entire Bell family are in my and our association's sincerest thoughts and prayers. -Dana Barker

I remember Wilbur Bell very well. His Mom, Ms. Mattie Bell, worked with and was like family with my grandparents, Judge Wilbur Nolen and Kathleen "Totsie" Nolen in Ashland, for decades. Ms. Mattie Bell was a devoted, hardworking, gregarious, humorous and unforgettable Christian lady in every respect. She is legendary in her home county and the Nolen family loves her and reveres her and always will. She was the Rock of Gibraltar for her family. Wilbur was a happy individual, and always smiling, when I would see him in Ashland in my youth. We will miss him and we consider him family and we give the Bell family our deepest sympathies. Richard M. Nolen, Sr. Atlanta, Georgia
