Sonja Yvonne Richardson, 72, of Columbus, GA died Saturday, September 25, 2021 in Columbus, GA.
Graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. EST Saturday, October 2, 2021 at West End Cemetery with Minister Walter Jackson, officiating. Visitation is Friday, October 1, 2021 from 1-5 p.m. EST.
Mrs. Sonja Yvonne Cox Richardson was born on May 3, 1949 in Phenix City, AL to Jacob Cox, Sr. and Sarah Randall Cox. She and her family moved to the Columbus area in 1969.
She attended South Girard High School in Phenix City, AL and graduated with the Class of 1966. She received a Bachelor Degree from Troy State University and a Master Degree from Grand Canyon University. Sonja worked in the Finance department as a civilian on the military base at Fort Benning, GA. She retired in 2014 with more than 30 years of service. She loved to provide support to our service members and the community. Sonja was known for her work ethic and motivation.
Sonja was a woman of immense faith. She lived her life by the commandments in the bible and was a consistent prayer. She was a member of the Church of Christ on Forrest Road, and she raised her children and grandchild to know God.
She is preceded in death by her brothers; Winston D. Cox, Harry J. Cox, Sr. and Jacob A. Cox, Jr.
Survivors include her husband of over 46 years, Benjamin Richardson, Jr; daughters: Tora’ Cox Hicks (Tommy Hicks), Tonia Richardson, Tenika Richardson Jones (Irving Jones), and Sarah Richardson Caudill (Jeff Caudill); grandchildren: Tara, Tamara, and Tia Hicks (Tora’); Kiara, Maliyah and Mikayla Richardson and Michael Humbert, Jr. (Tonia); Ivy and Ian Jones (Tenika); Kinser Caudill (Sarah), and one great grandchild, Cleo C. Exume’ (Tia Hicks); brother: Dr. Rudy B. Cox and his wife, DeBarra M. Cox.
Sonja was also blessed with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives that will miss her dearly.
