Josie Shepherd Sumbry, a woman of unwavering faith and devotion, transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home on September 21, 2024. Josie was a faithful believer in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her life was a living testimony to her love for Him. Wherever she went, she shared the good news of His grace, touching hearts and souls with her kindness and gentle spirit.
Josie was a cherished member of the Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a Voices of Zion choir member for many years, uplifting the congregation with her voice and passion for worship. Her love for her church community was evident, and she was known for her warm smile and loving embrace that welcomed everyone she encountered.
Born in Columbus, GA, Josie graduated from Spencer High School in 1958, where she formed lifelong friendships with her classmates. She was a natural people person, bringing joy to those around her with her contagious enthusiasm. Josie had a passion for shopping, and her engaging personality made her a beloved retail sales associate, where she touched the lives of countless customers and colleagues alike.
Josie's greatest joy, however, was her family. She found her deepest fulfillment in the time spent with her loved ones, always welcoming them with open arms, love, and a smile. She nurtured her relationships with her family and friends, offering support and encouragement throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Louise Shepherd, her devoted husband David Sumbry Sr., her brother Harry Shepherd Sr., and her sister Gloria Suggs.
Her legacy of love lives on through her family: two daughters, Kathy Sumbry-Wilkins (Frank) and Keela Thomas (Linden); her son David Sumbry Jr.; four granddaughters, Shakeesta Sumbry-Caldwell (Antron), Avian Sumbry Wilkins, Ariel Sumbry Wilkins, and Alexis Chantel Thomas; one grandson Linden Owen Thomas ll; two great-granddaughters; Ella Mae Sumbry Caldwell and Emmy Grace Sumbry Caldwell; two brothers Johhny Shepherd and James Shepherd; a beloved aunt Sarah Brooks; sister-in-law Julia Sumbry, brother-in-law Jimmie Sumbry, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Josie's life was a beacon of light, and her legacy will continue to inspire and bless all who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
