Obituary For Mrs. Hannah Cofield

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Hannah Cofield

On behalf of the staff and management of Strong & Jones Funeral Home, Inc., we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Hannah Cofield.

  • Sister Hannah Thompson-Cofield was born April 26, 1936, to the late Eddie Thompson Sr. and Lucille Bolton-Thompson. Hannah grew up in Tallahassee, Florida in an area off Meridian Road called the Hammock. She loved her siblings and would frequently talk and laugh about the many joyful, entertaining experiences they shared growing up. She was preceded in death by her husband Minister Starling Cofield, grand-daughter Alona Wilson, son-in-law B.G Baker, M.D., brothers Eddie, Amos, James, Robert and Eugene, and sisters Pennie, Alberta, Florida, Mary, Sallie, Ollie and Jessie, also sister-in-law Catherine Thompson.
  • Hannah was educated at the original Old Lincoln High School, later attending and completing her trade at Lively Vocational Technical School. She was passionate about never giving up the chance to learn something new and to always be willing to give back to society. Hannah enjoyed traveling, cooking, reading, working hidden puzzles and shopping to meet the needs of others.

She worked in various positions, but the one most dear to her heart was her position working with Special Needs Clients at Sunland State Hospital. Ending her career, Hannah retired from the State Department of Education Grant Management.

  • Sister Hannah accepted Christ at the tender age of 10 years old. She would often tell of surrendering her life to Jesus Christ, while singing a gospel song as she picked mulberries from a tree. That experience led her to declare the spot her praying ground. She loved singing and studying the Word of God, believing their relationship was special, she shared her faith with others. When asked what her favorite scripture was, she would reply, "Oh you mean what ‘s one of my favorite scriptures!", then quote: Psalm 119:105 and Psalm 121:8 KJV
  • “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." It was this scripture she shared with her great grands, encouraging them to “hide the word of God in their hearts daily that they may be full when going out and coming in." Sister Hannah’s church affiliations began at New Mount Zion A.M.E.C, under Rev. J.L. Daniels and Rev. J.L. Byrd before joining her late husband Minister Starling Cofield at St Mary Primitive Baptist Church under the leadership of Elder Dr. Ernest Ferrell.

Hannah will be forever missed by her three daughters Vanessa Tillman (Samuel) Sandra Baker, Jan Payne and loving god-daughter Monique Ewell. grandsons Samuel III, Alan, grand-daughters Ariel, Shalonda (Esq.) great grandsons Quentin, Jalen, and Chase, great grand=daughters Michaela, Janecia, McKenzie, Nariah. brother Charles Thompson; Orlando, Fl and Sister Tamer Thompson; brother-in-law Freddie Cofield, Sister-in-laws Willie Mae Fedd, Lillie Mae Dixon, Beatrice McNeffer and Freddie Mae Cofield all of Tallahassee and countless hosts of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends including Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church family where she was always welcomed with love.O
