Savannah McCarty Walker was born in Bartow, FL on November 1, 1937 to Savannah Griffin (who died in childbirth) and reared by her step-mom Candaisy Griffin and Roosevelt Griffin. She was the youngest of four siblings and the last surviving sibling to this union.
She spent her formative years growing up and attending schools in Polk County, Florida. After moving to Ft. Pierce with her sister Myrtle, she met and married Mitchell Ray McCarty in 1954 and had 3 sons: Darris McCarty, Vinson McCarty, and Sedrick McCarty. She retired from Indian River State College after 20 years of service and then served St. Lucie Recreational Center for another 20 years. Savannah was a loving wife and mother. Her greatest joy was going to church. She loved God and served faithfully as a member of Greater Mount Pleasant under Reverend Kilpatrick for nearly 70 years, both in Bartow and Fort. Pierce, FL. She was a joy to be around and everyone loved to be around her. Sheโs always been there for those she loved no matter what. She was a business woman in real estate and made more money retired than she made her whole life. Her strength showed through her will and determination.
God called our angel, Savannah, home to rest in the early morning hours of February 22, 2023. She fought and lived a vibrant life and is now resting peacefully with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings (Edward Griffin, Lloyd Griffin, and Myrtle Griffin) and her husband, Mitchell McCarty.
Savannah leaves to cherish her memories are her three loving sons: Darris McCarty, Huntersville, NC; Vinson (Gloria) McCarty, Sr., Laurel, MD; Sedrick (Tanya) McCarty, Sr., Indian Trail, NC; 11 grandchildren: Nicole McCarty (Kamal) Malik, Marietta, GA; Sheldra McCarty, Tampa, FL; Crestley McCarty, Bartow, FL; Florence Shelbi Desirae (Brencis) Stanford, Powder Springs, GA, Vinson McCarty, Jr., Laurel, MD; Britten McCarty, Washington, DC; Tiffany McCarty, Laurel, MD; Ian McCarty, Manhattan, NY, Erica McCarty, Sumpter, SC; Marcella McCarty, Indian Trail, NC; Sedrick McCarty, Jr., Charlotte, NC.; 2 nieces: Connie Shaw, Miami, FL, Deborah Chambers, Alabama; 1 nephew: J.B. โBossmanโ Chambers, Palm Bay, FL; and a host of great grandchildren, loving family and friends.
