Heraldo Garcia was born on September 23, 1930 to the late Carlos Garcia and Cordella Thompson. His grandmother, affectionately known as “Nen,” was an important part of raising him into adulthood. Heraldo grew up in York Town Clarendon, Jamaica. He was one of nine children.
As faith would have it, Heraldo and his future wife, Avis May Cottrell, affectionately known as Ruby grew up together. As children they were friends and their respective families were also friends. Growing into adulthood their friendship became more serious and together as husband and wife they had three children: Lorenzo, Sereka, and Loleta Garcia.
As husband & wife they began to assess their lives and their children’s future. Heraldo migrated to America in 1957, working as a contract worker. That was a conscious decision the young married couple made. It was more for immediate economic needs and dreams of a brighter future. A choice they both felt would give their children better opportunities and more stability. Their plans were gaining momentum when suddenly Avis his wife took sick and sadly passed in 1964 leaving Heraldo to raise their three children on his own.
His wife passing devastated Heraldo and his children. Her illness was not expected, but after a time of healing, Heraldo continued working as a contract worker. He was a hard worker, who strived to better himself to provide for himself and his children. Heraldo worked for the Okeelanta Sugarcane Company for 28 years until he retired in 2002.
In 1970, Heraldo remarried to Alice Bartell. Unfortunately, Alice passed away in 2010. After Alice’s death he remained on his own in Florida. He then moved to Tennessee where he devoted the rest of his life to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Heraldo loved the Lord. His daily rituals were first to read his bible, say his morning prayers, making sure to set up his relationship with the Lord for the day. He was also an avid newspaper reader. He read the papers and an assortment of books daily. His other passion included watching western cowboy movies. His favorite actors were Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. Heraldo, also loved to plant fruit trees. Many of his friends and neighbors claimed he had green thumbs because whatever he planted grew abundantly.
Heraldo spent his entire life showing kindness and support to people less fortunate than himself. He helped financially, medically, and emotionally. He felt that the Lord gave him opportunities and where he was able, he helped others. He was a charitable person who not only gave to his extended family and community but also charitable organizations. His heartfelt kindness did not stop with his fellow human beings, it also extends to animals. He would feed any stray or wild animals, especially cats and birds.
Preceeding him in death are his wives: Avis May Garcia and Alice Garcia; son: Lorenzo B. Garcia; sisters: Delmera Garcia, Louisa Garcia-Tomlin, and Mercedes Garcia-Leiba; brothers: Elecio Garcia and Antonio Garcia; grandson: Michael A. Garcia.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children: Sereka Garcia of Tennessee, Bernardo Garcia of Florida, Loleta Garcia-Scott(Murphy) of Tennessee; his sisters: Carmeta Garcia, Monica Garcia; brother: Beneto Garcia all residing in Clarendon, Jamaica; his special brother: Barrington Levy of Florida; grandchildren: Leautrice Moorer (Shunn), Omar Ellis, Latoya Nelson all residing in Tennessee, Justin Lee-Garcia, Quami Lee-Garcia, and Zoya Garcia all residing in England; cousin: Aletha Garcia, Jamaica; lifelong loyal friends: Mrs. Celeste Edwards and Roy Puranda of Florida; Thirteen Great Grandchildren; Two Great-Great Grandchildren; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
