Mrs. Martha Thompson was born in Monticello, Florida, on December 28, 1931, to the late Josh and Queen Victoria Hill. She attended the Jefferson County School System through middle school for her educational development.
On July 31, 1950, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Charlie Thompson Jr. To this union twelve children were born (six girls and six boys). Martha raised her family in Boston, Georgia with the help and guidance of her husband for over 38 years until he departed this life on October 16, 1988. She believed in building a solid foundation which would help her children develop skills to be independent thinkers and leaders as they learned how to navigate life on a farm. She also accepted Christ as her Lord and personal savior on August 11, 1974, under the pastoral ship of Rev. T. J. Haynes. Then she became a proud, lifelong member of New Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Boston, Georgia; where she served faithfully as an usher and deaconess, as she worked tirelessly on the Mother’s Board.
Martha also enjoyed a plethora of other activities during her lifetime such as gardening, cooking, dancing, and entertaining young minds and hearts. In her spare time, she made quilts for loved ones, but was extremely passionate about being there for her elders by making routine visits and helping them run personal errands. This brought her a sense of joy to know she was assisting others that could not do for themselves. However, if you really knew “Madea”, as she was affectionately known, then you knew that it was nothing for her to tell you to go pick your own switch from one of the trees in the yard so that she could administer that spanking that was coming your way for whatever misdeed you were guilty of committing. But, within the next few minutes or so would be smiling and talking to you as if you committed no wrongdoing because she really loved you.
Over the course of her life, Martha also established a second career that extended beyond housewife, farm life, and rearing children. She provided twenty-one years of care and service to the residents at Glenn-Mor Nursing Home in Thomasville, Georgia before she retired. After her retirement, she served as a Foster Grandparent at Southwestern State Hospital Rose Haven Unit for seven years. Martha Thompson’s legacy will forever resonate faith in God and love for her family and friends.
Martha Thompson had the following siblings that preceded her in death: three sisters Mary Horn, Queen Hall of Miami, Florida & Lillie Mae Sneed of Boston, Georgia; two brothers Willie Hill and Josh Hill of Miami, Florida. She leaves to celebrate 90 years of her life: five daughters Sarah Bryant, Miami, Florida, Catherine Hagins (James) of Gordon, Georgia, Ruby Barnes (Marvin) of Okinawa Japan, Eula “Kaye” Woodruff (Gregory) of Augusta, Georgia, & Clera Porter of Tallahassee, Florida; four sons: Johnny Thompson (Geraldine) of Boston, Georgia, Carl Thompson of Camellia, Georgia, Phillip Thompson (Vonda) of Bowling Green, Kentucky, & Andrew Thompson (Wysteria) of Ooltewah, Tennessee. Martha also had one daughter, two sons, and one daughter-in-law that departed this earthly life before her to be with Jesus: Barbara Allen, James David Thompson, and Charlie Thompson III (Priscilla). She also leaves to celebrate her life: two loving sister-in-laws; Bessie Mae Carr of Boston, Georgia & Mary Jean Hill of Monticello, Florida. Martha Thompson was blessed in life with thirty grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, & friends.
