Obituary
Mr. Eugene McGhee, Sr., was born on May 31, 1964, in Quitman, Georgia, to the late Mr. Elmer McGhee and Mrs. Effie Demps McGhee. He was the youngest of ten children.
Eugene was affectionately known to most of his family members and friends as Gene. He grew up in Quitman and attended the Brooks County School System. He was employed at the Quitman Elementary School for 14 years. Eugene was united in holy matrimony with Mary Lee McGhee on January 29, 1988. Their bond was blessed for 33 years at the time of his passing.
Eugene was very fun-loving and witty; he was a comedian and was full of life. One of his favorite sayings was, “It’s a McGhee thing; you wouldn’t understand.” He was resourceful and good with his hands. His many talents included wiring electronics like sound systems and audio devices, fixing cars, and anything around the house that needed fixing. He took pride in his yard, cutting and caring for his lawn in his own unique way. He was known for enjoying his favorite television shows: Columbo, The Price is Right, Family Feud, and McGuyver. His favorite sports team was the Brooks County Trojans! His favorite activity was spending time and relaxing with his grandbabies, who he loved so much, and they loved every minute of the time they spent with him.
On September 14, 2021, he was called from labor to reward. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Cedric McGhee and Tony McGhee; father-in-law, Willie C. Bell, Sr.; one brother, Olen Demps; and one sister, Helen McGhee Goolsby.
He leaves to mourn but cherish his precious memories to: his loving, dedicated wife of 33 years, Mary Lee McGhee; his loving children, Arnesha Griffin, Kendrick McGhee (fiancée, Tequira Davis), Pamela McGhee, Helen Scoggin (William), Eugenia Johnson (De’Andre), Eugene McGhee, Jr., Moesha Hollis (Justin), Breanne McGhee, Nicholas McGhee, and Keyonna McGhee; his grandkids, Kendrick McGhee, Jr., Asia McGhee, Taliyah McGhee, Kei’mon McGhee, Ka’mya McGhee, Alexander Jones, Gracie Scoggin, Khiri Griffin, André Johnson, and Nathan McGhee; his mother-in-law, Velma Bell; his siblings, Hugh McGhee, Sr., Elmer Lee Bell (Roy), Jim McGhee, Sr., (Evelyn, deceased), Irene Williams (Willie), Willie McGhee, Sr. (Nora), and Brenda Little (Larry); brother-in- law, Willie C. Bell, Jr.; sister-in-law, Velma Marie Bell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.
A celebration of life will be Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 1PM at North End Cemetery on the McGhee Family Lot, with Pastor Floyd Demps, eulogist. Visitation will be Tuesday at the Stevens-McGhee Chapel from 2PM-7PM. Visit this website or our Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home Facebook Page to view a livestream of the celebration.
