Gilbert Lee Hatcher, Jr. was born on October 15, 1938 in Birmingham, Alabama. He passed away on November 18, 2023 at Atrium Hospice House, Monroe, NC. His devoted wife provided professional care for him in their home up to three days before his death.
“Hatcher” (as most people called him) lived for a short time in Alabama before his father moved the family to Indianapolis, Indiana. Hatcher graduated from Crispus Attucks High School, Indianapolis, Indiana. After graduation, he moved to Long Island, New York and became a Certified Pharmacist Technician at Pilgrim State Hospital, Brentwood, New York. Hatcher moved to Wadesboro, NC in August, 1970. He joined the Wadesboro Police Force as a patrolman and attended Richmond Technical Institute, (now Richmond Community College) Rockingham NC where he studied Police Science. His final place of employment was at Teledyne Allvac, Monroe, NC where he was a welder. He retired after 21 years of dedicated Service.
Hatcher was baptized at an early age and joined Bethesda MBC, Indianapolis, Indiana. He joined West Rocky MBC in 1971 and was a member there for a short time. Hatcher joined First Baptist Church-Ballard Street (now First Baptist Church-Sikes Avenue), Wadesboro. NC. Deacon Hatcher served faithfully in the church until he became disabled. He served as an: Usher, ordained Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Church Treasurer, member of the A.L. Bell Inspirational and FBC Male Chorus and served on the New Church Building Committee.
Hatcher was articulate in his speech and detailed with any task put before him. He always referred to his friends as “good people”. Deacon Hatcher hobbies included: fishing, reading, and supervising maintenance on his Volkswagen. He loved singing Spirituals and listening to jazz music.
Deacon Hatcher loved his family and was an excellent provider. He cared for their children while his wife attended college.
Hatcher was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert Hatcher, Sr. and Ruth Taylor Hatcher; three brothers: Herman Hatcher, Jesse Hatcher and Larry Hart; and three sisters: Mattie Ruth Hatcher, Mary Hatcher Dodson and Annie Hatcher Cooley Carson.
He leaves to cherish his memories, wife of 58 years, Allyne, two sons, Gilbert III and Eric; three grandchildren: Erica Tiana, Gilbert IV and Isaiah Hatcher; two brothers, Lionel Hart (Jearline), Birmingham , Alabama and Wilbert Hatcher, Indianapolis, Indiana; one sister, Regina Iron, Indianapolis, Indiana; one brother-in-law, Wendell Little who was like a younger brother; nieces who were like daughters, Janice Little-Bennett and Renee’ Little; special nieces and nephews: Warren Cooley, William Cooley, Anthony Bradley, Lisa Cooley and Shalonda Price all of Indianapolis, Indiana. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and “Good People”.
Gilbert L. Hatcher, Jr. will truly be missed by his family near and far away.
The Homegoing Services will be on Saturday, November 25, 2023, 1:00pm, First Baptist Church, 722 Sikes Avenue, Wadesboro, North Carolina. Interment will follow the service at Westview Memorial Park, Highway 74-West, Wadesboro, North Carolina.
The Hatcher Family will greet family and friends on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 12:30-1:00pm at First Baptist Church
The public viewing will be on Friday, November 24, 2023 from 2:30-5:00pm at Smith Funeral Home.
