Tears fill my eyes with grand selfishness as I remember fondly our phone calls, memories of the gifted Sunday School Publishing Board during national events, in the Progressive Baptist Church Choir stand under the direction of the incomparable Thomas "Tommy" B. New, III, and with Mt. Zion Baptist Church as you sang for my beloved father's funeral. Every time you opened your mouth to utter a lyric, you brought the house down. I was saddened to hear the news of Mama Val's passing because she was such a light to everyone she encountered. She was a sweet lady and always made me feel welcomed. Val I don't know what to say. My heart is broken. I have never met someone and we bonded like we have known each other 30 years. You were a jewel and I will always cherish our sister hood. Aunt Val, she became my aunt a few years back when her and mom became friends, Mom lived across the street from Aunt Val and she always checked on my mom and did things for her. I would see Aunt Val at the store and she would holla out "Hi Nephew" and I would say "Hi Aunt Val" and we both would just life. Truly a child of God, an amazing vocal talent, and just an all around sweet person. Although I was a frequent VISITOR at the Mt, she called me daughter and I called her mom. I will truly miss her. I would see her with her husband thru the halls of the Nashville VA, she would always have an encouraging word regarding the Lord and that would make my day; also some Veterans Day.
