Marian Odessa Hampton Ewing was born in Nashville, TN in 1932 on September 20th to Ruby Purcell Hampton and Clifford Hampton.
She attended the Nashville public school system, graduated from Pearl High School and went on to attend cosmetology school, becoming a licensed cosmetologist.
Soon after, she married Alvin Ewing. Since neither drove, the story goes that they pedaled their bicycles to the courthouse to get married. This created a special generational relationship as a brother and a sister (Marian and Joseph Hampton) married a brother and sister (Hazel and Alvin Ewing). Uncle Joe married Aunt Hazel and Alvin Sr. married Marian. These connections intertwined the lives of two families, making us fond of our relationship as “double cousins.”
The union between Alvin and Marian brought forth Arnella Marie Brown, Alvin Purcell Ewing Jr., Brenda Ewing Sanders and Adrienne Ewing-Roush.
Marian was beloved by her customers who appreciated her friendly, caring nature and her soothing, massaging shampoo hands. She worked in various beauty parlors including England’s, George Spero’s Hair Salon, Scott Taylor Salon, Illusions Day Spa and Salon as well as Kiva Salon.
Marian was a member of the Westwood Baptist Church family and she loved the Lord, but to us she was a person who seemed to allow deeds, not words, to adorn her actions. She lived her life in a spirit of service to others. Marian was a devoted mother, wife and friend and she was always thinking about providing for the well-being of others.
After a long life well lived, Marian was preceded in death by her husband, her son, Alvin Jr., son-in law, James Brown III (Arnella) and grandson, Gregory Ewing; sisters Vivian Hampton Tucker (Rev. Dr. Joseph Tucker) and Judith Hargrove Williams; and brothers Robert Hampton (Helen Hampton Codrington) and Joseph C. Hampton (Hazel); and lifelong friend Geraldine “Chi-Chi” Harrison. She is survived by her brother Raymond Codrington (Joyce) of Fayetteville, N.C. and sisters-in-law Martyna Ewing and Dorothy “Polly” Fitzpatrick.
Her legacy lives on in daughters Arnella “Nel”, Brenda, and Adrienne, daughter-in-law Lynn Ewing (Alvin, Jr.) and son-in-law Obadiah Ewing-Roush (Adrienne); grandchildren Marc (Arnella), Kenon, Thalia and Dante (Alvin); and Sydney, Jordyn and Langston (Adrienne). The family extends special appreciation to granddaughter Whitney (Brenda), for providing devoted and impeccable at-home care to Marian, giving Marian comfort and unwavering love through her last months of on this earth.
Marian had five great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
We take comfort in knowing that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord,” (Corinthians 5:8). Our prayer is that the Pearly Gates be thrown open wide for this kind and loving soul, who will never be forgotten.
The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the care given to our mother by the caring staff at Caris Hospice Care Services. Thanks also to Effie Hargrove and Diane Watson.
Thanks from the bottom of our hearts to Smith Funeral Directors.
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
