Obituary For Rev. Portia Alexander

Funeral services for Reverend Portia Alexander, 61, of 433 Summit Parkway, Orangeburg, SC will be held at 1:00PM, Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Brown Chapel AME Church, 195 Browns Chapel Road, Elloree, SC, with interment to follow in Providence AME Church Cemetery. Reverend Michael Buckson is officiating.

Reverend Portis Denise Jackson Alexander, the daughter of Mrs. Mary M. B. Jackson and the late Mr. Roosevelt Jackson, was born on September 1, 1958. Reverend Alexander enter eternal rest on December 15, 2019.

She attended the public schools of Orangeburg, South Carolina. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from South Carolina State University. She continued her education and obtained a Master of Arts degree from Leslyn University and a Master of Arts degree from Cambridge University.

Reverend Alexander received the “Calling” from the Almighty God to teach, minister and preach His word in 2005. Her ministerial assignments past and present included: Pastor of Zion Hill AME Church, Pineville, SC; Local Elder at Providence AME Church, St. Matthews, SC and Local Elder at Cedar Grove AME Church, Orangeburg, SC.

She was a tenured and dedicated employee of the Orangeburg Consolidated School District Public School System, where she taught for 28 years. She most recently taught at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, Orangeburg, SC.

Reverend Alexander held numerous positions and offices in the church, community and education arenas; however, she want to be remembered not by the titles held or positions filled but that she was a “Child of The King!”

She leaves to cherish precious memories three children: Dennis Alexander, Jr. of Orangeburg, SC, Ashley (Leonard) Cooper of Columbia, SC and Shafari Alexander of Orangeburg, SC; two grandchildren: Leonard, Jr and Keziah Cooper of Columbia, SC; one sister, Lovotus (James) Hicks of Columbia, SC; two brothers: Andra Jackson of Orangeburg, SC and Darius (Tamara) Jackson of Dacula, GA; five nephews: Austin Jackson of Los Angeles, CA, Kalen Hicks, Marquise Hicks and John Hicks all of Columbia, SC, and Andra Jackon, II of Swansea, SC; seven nieces: Crystal Kitchens of Columbia, SC, Tangela Kitchens of Winnsboro, SC, Breanna Jackson of Columbia, SC Darienne Jackson of Columbia, SC, Ariel Jackson, Mia Jackson and Leila Jackson all of Dacula, GA; a very special aunt and uncle, Reverend Clarence (Martha) Bookard of Columbia, SC; her “besties,” closest friends and a host of family, friends, loved ones and students at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.

The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.

Reverend Alexander passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2019 at Lexington Medical Center, Lexington, SC.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 20, 2019 from 12:30pm to 8:00pm.

Friends and family may call at the residence, 433 Summit Parkway, Orangeburg, SC or Simmons Funeral Home & Crematory of Orangeburg.
