Funeral services for Mr. Norman Schliefer, 77, of 185 Martha Heights Lane, North, SC, will be held 2:30 p.m., Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel, 2868 Columbia Road, Orangeburg, SC, with interment to follow in Sunnyside Cemetery.
Norman Washington Schliefer was born October 8, 1945 and passed away October 27, 2022 surrounded by his wife and family. He was born in Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine, Jamaica, West Indies .
He attended Old Harbour Bay Primary School and Old Harbour Secondary High School. He is affectionately called “Sonny” by his childhood friends. At age 18, he moved out on his own and worked as a welder in Kingston Jamaica. In 1967, he migrated to New York. On his very first day, he met Basil Jarrett and they became life long friends and brothers. With Basil’s help, he got the lay of the land. Norman worked as a taxi driver and later became a certified tool and dye maker.
In 1972, he met Annie Harley. They were married in 1982 and relocated to South Carolina in 1985. He worked at Ducane Corporation, then to Roper, now known as Husqvarna, where he was a mentor to many of his younger coworkers. He was very close to his brothers and sisters-in-law, and they affectionately referred to him as “Rasta Man”. He and Basil went on many road trips back to New York to visit his family, often bringing back a whole goat, cut up and frozen.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Agatha Burris Schliefer and father, Herbert Schliefer. Those who will remember and always love him are: his wife, Annie Schliefer, sister, Lucia Schliefer, his seven children and one step-son: Jacqueline, Mark, Phedra, Katherine, Christopher, Denise, Richard and Aisha; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 2 special nieces; 1 nephew; brothers and sisters-in-law: Martha Colter, John (Bernice) Harley, Jerry (Rose) Hart, Joe (Mary) Houston, Norman (Shirley) Rivers all of North, South Carolina, Ronnie Harley Summerville, South Carolina; and host of other loving relatives and dear friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 4, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
