The funeral services for the late Mrs. Rowena Morgan of 632 Sumner Street, Sylvester, Georgia who departed this life on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at her residence, will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. from the First African Baptist Church, Sylvester, Georgia. Burial will follow in the Shepard Memorial Garden Cemetery in Sylvester, Georgia. Mrs. Rowena Kitt Rogers was born on July 25, 1928, in Orlando Florida to doting parents Mr. Fred C. Rogers and Mrs. Johnnie Mae Colton-Rogers. At the age of twelve Rowena moved to Georgia with her grandmother Anna Lee Colton who was raising her since her mother’s passing. Rowena made Georgia her home and later graduated from Oak Hill High School in Sylvester, GA in 1943. After graduation she briefly attend Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, Florida.
An unwavering Christian, Rowena accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1942, joining Brooks Chapel (later changed to First African Baptist Church) where she remained a member until 2010 when she moved her membership to Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. During her years of service at Brooks Chapel (FAB) Rowena served as the Youth Director, Director of the annual Christmas and Easter Program, and played the piano every Sunday during Sunday School. Rowena’s acts of service in the name of Christ continued until she became incapacitated in 2019.
On May 6, 1956, Rowena married the love of her life, Joseph N. Morgan Sr. Together the two expanded their family to four children: Lewis L. Rogers (Geraldine Rushing), Laurastene V. Rogers, Joseph N. Morgan Jr., and Lottie Y. Morgan-Powell. Rowena and Joseph’s union was only separated by Joseph’s death in 2020.
Rowena worked as a secretary for Shephard Funeral Home for many years before becoming an admissions clerk at Worth County Community Hospital. She later retired to stay home and take care of her grandchildren and later great grandchildren.
Rowena was proceeded in death by both parents, one son, Lewis and one grandchild, Nicholas Rogers (Maya Simmons), and lastly by her husband Joseph Sr. Rowena is survived by her daughters Laurastene, and Lottie, and son, Joseph Jr (Kimberly Wright); grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends and family members.
Rowena was the definition of style and grace. She will forever be remembered by all who knew her for her love of shoes, fashion flair, and elegant ways.
