Our Heavenly Father called to rest, William “Bill” Thomas Mason, on Monday,
January 27, 2025. Bill, 79, was born on December 15, 1945, in Richmond, Virginia to the late William Mason, and Marilyn Payne Logan.
Educated in the Richmond Public School system, Bill excelled academically and went on to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied computer science.
Prior to pursuing post-secondary education, Bill served his country proudly in the United States Army, during the Vietnam War. He received the distinction of Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device for heroism, for his excellent judgment and precise actions, which helped identify hostile forces, and prevented loss of personnel.
Beyond his military service, Bill was an active and faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where his faith guided his actions, and inspired those around him. Bill, who was an ordained deacon, found great purpose in serving his church community, generously offering his time, wisdom, and kindness.
Bill loved politics, sports, and sharing a meal and discussion with fellow combat veterans at Panera Bread. Bill frequented Panera Bread almost daily prior to his health declining. And he jokingly remarked that he qualified for many discounts, due to his consistent patronage. Bill pursued his interests fully after retiring from the information technology sector at Bank of America. He held several positions throughout his career, but he most enjoyed the challenge of helping customers solve computer-related problems. Retirement also gave Bill the opportunity to travel with the love of his life, his wife, Cheryl Taylor Mason, who predeceased him.
Bill was a loving father to two daughters, Kimberly Lipscomb (Troy), and Jena Mason-Miller (Duane), who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. One grandson, Ocean Lipscomb; also leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved sister, Joyce Childs, dedicated sisters-in-law, Yvette Walker and Yvonne Wallace, nieces, Robin Adu-Gyami, Renee Childs, and Rea Childs, and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends, who loved him dearly.
Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where viewing will be held Thursday, February 6 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 7 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 216 W. Leigh Street. Interment Virginia Veterans Cemetery Amelia.
Condolences to the family of Deacon Mason. I met him at Ebenezer Baptist Church. I am not a member, but a member of the handbell choir. I would speak to him when I visited my mother at Yama Services. May God comfort you and give you peace.
Dear Cousin Jena, I hope this message finds you surrounded by love and support during this difficult time. Bill meant the world to us, and it truly saddens our hearts to hear the news of his passing. It brings some comfort to Mom and me that we had the chance to see him recently, and reconnecting with you has been a precious bonus amid our grief.
We want you to know that we are praying for strength for you and your family. We believe that he is now worshipping God and rejoicing in heaven, free from all discomfort.
Thank you, Jesus, for the gift of his life. Praise God for the memories we shared and the love that continues...
With all our love and prayers,
Love, Tinkie and Mrs. Mary
