Obituary For William Hugo Jackson

William Hugo Van Jackson, Jr., 86, native of Richmond, departed this life on April 3, 2022 where he resided in Ellicott City, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Johnson. Surviving are his son, William Hugo Van Jackson, III (Annie); two grandsons, William Hugo Van Jackson, IV and Hugh Varon Jackson (Jessica); two granddaughters, Ashley Hardy (Donmanique) and Bianca Parrish; two great grandchildren, Asher Jackson and Donmanique Hardy, Jr.; sister-in-law, Goldie Parks Van Jackson; nieces, Pamela V. Piggee and HelenRuth Van Jackson Vines; great nieces, Alexis, Ameera and Taylor and a host of cousins, family members and friends. Hugo Jackson’s kind nature and giving spirit touched everyone who knew him. He loved well and laughed often while telling a joke or sharing a story. Brother Hugo Jackson, the only child of the late Annibea and Hugo Jackson, Sr., accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at an early age. He was baptized as a child at the 14th and Broad Streets location of First African Baptist Church. He was a dedicated church member where he served his church family through his love for music. He served for many years as a member of the senior choir. Inspired by the existing Sunday School Orchestra, Hugo Jackson started the Church Orchestra as a part of the music ministry. Hugo also helped to secure musical instruments for the First African Baptist Church day care center where he introduced preschool aged children to music. He was passionate about serving senior citizens in our community and so he committed the orchestra to providing mini concerts at various nursing homes in the Richmond area. Brother Jackson always demonstrated his loyal support of the church in its ministry and church events. Hugo Jackson was educated in Richmond Public Schools. He furthered his education at Virginia State University by earning bachelor and master degrees in education. He taught music education in Chesterfield County and later in Richmond Public Schools, where he retired after more than thirty years. During his tenure, he led the marching bands of Thomas Jefferson, George Wythe and Hugenot High Schools to participate in and win several competitions. He was passionate about education. During his career, he helped many students secure college scholarships in the field of music education. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and The Richmond Jazz Society. He shared his music with the community by creating the jazz ensemble, “The Sounds Of Elegance” in which he performed for events in the greater Richmond area. In his retirement years, he found pleasure gardening and spending time with his grandsons. He was asked in an interview why he decided to become a musician. He answered by saying, “When I played the piano before a crowd for the first time, I saw that it put a smile on their faces. I decided at that moment that I wanted to reach out and touch people and make them smile with my music”. He will be remembered for his kindness, warm sense of humor and as a loving father, grandfather and friend. Remains rest at Scott’s Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. where viewing will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2022. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, April 7 at Scott’s Chapel, 116 E.
