Early Sunday morning on March 10, 2024, our dearly beloved Savannah Elizabeth Thompson heard the call of her Heavenly Father and entered into eternal rest. Savannah was born January 5, 1937, in Northumberland County, to the late Elizabeth Middleton and Lawrence Sutton.
When Savannah was only six months old, her mother, Elizabeth, became ill and passed away. Savannah and Otea Sutton (her one and only brother who preceded her in death), were then reared by their Aunt Lottie Middleton Hooper. Aunt Lottie, or “Mama,” as they would later affectionately call her, birthed one daughter Erma. Savannah, Otea, and Erma bonded as loving siblings, and the three of them became known as Mama’s children.
Savannah was a very optimistic and enthusiastic person, always thriving hard to succeed. After attending and graduating from Julius Rosenwald School in 1955, she moved and sought employment in Richmond, Virginia with a Laundry Service Company. In 1963, she met the love of her life, Alfonzo (Al). They relocated to New York City, married, and resided there for more than 35 years. She worked and retired as a Supervisor for the AT&T Telephone Company with more than 30 years of service.
Upon retiring, Savannah and Al returned to Richmond, Virginia, the place they would again call home. In 2015, Al passed and Savannah would have to rely on her inner strength to pick up the pieces and to move forward. Though she had a driver’s license, she never drove when Al was alive. Yet, with great fortitude she trusted herself to drive, and that she did. She had two cars and drove wherever those “wheels” would take her. As a totally independent woman now, nothing could hold her back. Her family even thought that she would never live alone; but to their surprise, she lived alone the rest of her days till death. And, just as the Bible promises, God blessed Savannah with a long, healthy, successful life. She has now transitioned from labor to reward. She will be forever missed, loved and remembered in our hearts.
She leaves to cherish her memories: two step children, Renee Derricott and Michael Thompson (Florence); four step grandchildren: Franklin and Chris Derricott, Michael Jr. and Marcus Thompson; nieces: Barbara Ann Sutton, Savannah Owens, Marion Curry, Lottie Tyler, Gene Jones and Crystal Tilghman; nephews: Kevin Sutton, Joshua and Raymond Jones Jr.; brother-in-law, Raymond L. Jones; sister-in-law, Priscilla Sutton; two godsons: Kyle Curry and Christopher Massenburg; long-time family/friends: Rosetta Veney, Christine Richardson, Veronica (aka Ronnie) Massenburg and Preston Parker; two loving and devoted neighbors: Aniclee Coward and Debbie Ramsey; and many other loved ones.
