Obituary For Roy Thomas Day, Sr.

Elder Roy Thomas Day, Sr. departed this life June 14, 2023 surrounded by his beloved Sharon B., family and friends. Roy Thomas Day, Sr. was born on April 28, 1945 in Bramwell, West Virginia to the late Nelson and Anne Marie Day. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged from service in 1964. After leaving the Air Force, he moved to Columbus, Ohio where his life would be forever changed. Elder Day began his government career working as a Youth Director. He met a young office worker named Sharon Sterling at 1032 Mount Vernon Avenue. They dated and were married on June 28, 1969. In July of 1974, he began his federal career working in the Office of Fair Housing for H.U.D. It was in this role, that Elder Day, better known as “Tom” to his colleagues, rose to great prominence as a Senior Director, fighting for the rights of the underprivileged and the disenfranchised. He remained at H.U.D until his retirement on January 2, 2007. In August of 1971, Elder Day answered the call to ministry at Rehoboth Temple Church, under the leadership of the late Bishop Spencer. On August 28, 1977, he was ordained an Elder of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In December of 1979, Elder Day and his family relocated to Richmond, VA where they would reside as husband and wife until his passing. Elder Day served in various church leadership roles and also pastored Solomon Temple Church located in his home in the Varina area. In 1988, Elder Day and his family joined Greater Refuge Church, where he served for several years, under the leadership of Bishop Peters. In 2018 Elder Day and Mother Day joined Greater Anointing Church, under the leadership of Apostle James Clarke. Elder Day loved to serve the seniors with his famous soup and provided monthly church services and served communion to those who were unable to attend in person. He loved to fish with anyone who was willing to go. He was passionate about his family and instilled in them the Word of God at an early age and the power of prayer. A loving husband, preacher, father, singer, cook, prayer warrior, football coach, and a genuine friend to those who knew him. Elder Day is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mother Sharon B. Day and their children, Tawanna, Roy Jr. (Adrian), Robert (Miranda), Tameika (Calvin) and Ryan (Lakeisha); fourteen grandchildren, Terahn, Lauren, Xiara, Ayanna, Mya, Bria, Ryan, Roy Timothy, McKenna, Tiffany, Faith, Anaya, Alaiya, and Arielle; several brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, a host of close friends and clergy. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. where viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2023 followed by the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24 at Greater Refuge Church Ministries, 2210 Carter Street. Bishop Samuel R. Peters eulogist. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
