Born Rosa “Rose” Lee Dickens, on September 17, 1946, in Scotland Neck, North Carolina, the eldest daughter of Bennie and Ida Mae Dickens, peacefully departed this life on December 23, 2023. Rose and her family were members of Cedar Creek Baptist Church where she was baptized at a young age. Educated in Halifax County Schools, she graduated from Brawley High School on June 9, 1965.
After graduation, Rose moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she later wedded Otis D. Hawkins, Sr. in 1969 and together they had two daughters, Erica R. (Hawkins) Scott and Catina (L.) Hawkins Jones, and a son, Otis D. Hawkins Jr. In 1992, Rose married Alvin Lewis, and after a decade together, they remained close friends.
Devoting 35 years to The Virginia ABC Board, Rose formed lasting friendships with coworkers that endured beyond her retirement. A faithful member of the Village of Faith Ministries, she attended until her health declined. Affectionately known as "Chip" by close family, Rose was cherished for her sweet, sassy, and loving personality. Always smiling and quick to laugh, she adored her family and was a devoted mother and grandmother. Rose's high-pitched whiney voice, a trademark of her charm, often melted the hearts of her family who lovingly indulged her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and oldest daughter, Erica R. Scott. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Catina H. Jones (Robert); son, Otis D. Hawkins, Jr. (Ara); thirteen grandchildren, Jasmine Booker, Nathaniel Scott III, Joy Archie, Jewel Scott, Nathan Scott, Jahonna Scott, Nehemiah Scott, Ashanti Pittman, Asha Wright, Amari Wright, Breyauna Jones, Isaiah Jones and Lyla Hawkins; six great grandchildren, Nyla Mitchell, Siah Booker, Layla Archie, Alana Archie, Kingston Scott and Andrew Maples III; sister, Betty Jean Dickens; devoted life partner, Eric Harris; other loving family members and dedicated friends including, Florence Jones, Gale Willis, Diane Washington, Dale Clark, Virginia Fairly, Delores Bailey, Ruth Walker and Sharon Taylor.
