Mother Joyce Rose Hannah of 5535 Gilling Road, N. Chesterfield went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday February 11, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her children and loved ones.
Mother Hannah was born on November 23, 1940, to the late Clarence and Clarine Shands and was the youngest of 3 sibling daughters. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents, her parents Clarence and Clarine Shands, her oldest sister Lenora Shands and her beloved Husband Edward J. Hannah Sr.
Mother Joyce Rose Hannah was educated by Richmond Public Schools where she attended Navy Hill Elementary, Booker T. Washington Junior High, and Maggie L. Walker High School, all a part of the historic Jackson Ward district. On February 25, 1968, she married her devoted Husband Edward J. Hannah united for 56 years raising seven children until his passing. Motherhood was one of her callings and not only did she raise her own children, but she also raised and poured love into many other children including her grand and great grandkids, nieces and nephews who would visit during the summer, her children's friends and Children that she was a care provider for over the years. She was a fierce lioness when it came to her children and there was never a time that she wasn't there to love on, support, provide and pray for them when needed.
She was also very resourceful and business savvy which was reflected as the owner of a family cosmetology business.
Her other calling was ministry and on the night that she became born again, baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost, her life changed, and she was never the same. Her work with Christ caused her to fall in love with God and the church. She gave her service faithfully to the work of the kingdom and her devotions in ministry grew in stature at Greater Refuge Church of Our Lord and Jesus Christ under the careful leadership of Bishop Samuel R. Peters for over thirty years, and an extension of the ministry at her current church home Greater Anointing under Pastor Raymond Overby. She led a Godly lifestyle and served with immense joy on the Missionary Board, Woman's Council and the Senior Choir for decades. Anyone she encountered got ministered to about her God, his goodness, and her love for and faith in him in all things. Her witness caused many souls to receive Christ and be saved.
Hannah as she was lovingly called at church was known for her stylish dressing, love for jewelry and her big church hats. She was a loyal, passionate and fierce Mother known for her feisty spirit and "the truth is the light" mantra. She is loved by many, and we will definitely miss her spirit filled prayers and trust in God, her wisdom filled phone conversations and text messages, her jokes and witty comments, her love for music and the church, her compassion and need to help everyone that she encountered and her love for all things ANIMAL PRINT.
She is survived by her devoted sister: Rae Harley; her loving children: Demetrius Pittman, Benita Taylor (Jerry), Edward Hannah Jr., Clarence Hannah, Terri McDavid (Romanus), Trese Hannah and Alysha Hannah; 17 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family members and friends including sandbox friends of up to 75+ years: Mary Cooley Woodson, Joyce Gurdy and Barbara Davis (just to name a few)
