Deborah Carter Gilliam, 62, of Richmond, peacefully passed away April 8, 2024. She was an only child, born to Thomas and Edith Carter on May 11, 1961. Deborah grew up in Richmond, Virginia and graduated from John Marshall High School. She continued her education and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from Virginia Union University.
In 1989, she married Reuben L. Gilliam, II, and welcomed their first child, Toni. Her goals immediately shifted to maximize her time with Toni. Deborah returned to school and completed a Master's Degree in Education, from Virginia State University. The new career path would ensure when Toni became school aged, she would always share the same schedule as her daughter. Every school year, she looked forward to being able to spend each break and holiday with her family. The decision to become a teacher was initially made for her daughter, but it ultimately became a huge part of Deborah's life and set the precedent for her life's journey. Deborah gave birth to her second daughter, Taylor Gilliam in 1995. It was clear that her children were most important and later, grandchildren. Education became her love and passion second only to her family.
In 2007, Deborah started her second act and relocated to Henry County, Georgia. It was there she created a new community of students and co-workers, many of whom became her Georgia family. Deborah was a dedicated teacher for over 20 years. She worked hard to make sure grades were posted, parents were informed, and her classroom environment felt safe. Her loving nature, encouragement and support had a lasting impact on the lives of her students, many of whom carried their relationship beyond graduation. Students would check in on her through their adulthood and continued to include her in their major life milestones.
Deborah was passionate about her support system. She would often indulge in hanging out with her friends, and talking on the phone with her Mom and daughters daily. Her will to live centered around her family. She fought hard and displayed so much strength during the last few months of her life. Her heart was physically weak, but that did not stop her from displaying an abundance amount of love to her close family and friends.
Deborah is forever and lovingly remembered by her mother, Edith Carter; daughters, Toni Gilliam (Jay), and Taylor Gilliam (Jai'mon); grandchildren, Chase, Reuben and Lillian; other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Interment Appomattox Cemetery, Hopewell, Va. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Deborah's life. Arrangements by Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd.

Ms Deborah will truly be missed! Our conversations on Saturday mornings were such a blessing. Gonna miss the moments we found a way to laugh during some most difficult moments. Definitely was sunshine on a cloudy day. Praying and believing that God will continually keep, protect, and take care of her family. Thankful to have met such a wonderful person! Grateful for the time she trusted me to take care of her hair. Arenetta Hall Jackson, Focused On You Hair Salon
My deepest sympathy to Deborah's mother and family. Although, she and I lost contact nearly 40 yrs ago - I often thought about Deborah (believing that where ever she was, she was doing great things!). I will always remember how she was such a nice neighbor to me. We met when we were both 13 yrs old. My fondest memory was- when I (and my parents), had just moved into the neighborhood / next door the her & her parents. I remember (as if it was just yesterday) (looking out the window and seeing this little girl (with bright RED hair??) - smile walking between the 2 houses. Finally, she came onto my porch, knocked on the door, and asked my mom "can the new girl come outside and play?"* We would spend hours sitting on each other's porch, laughing, eating junk food, and talking until it became dark outside. We attended JM High (at the same time), graduated and lost contact. It was another neighbor (that I recently ran into) who told me about her passing. I'll definitely remember, and always think fondly of Deborah. May the Lord comfort her mom, and her family* - Renee Cowans
Ms. Gilliam, thank you for pouring into my son, as he was blessed with the opportunity to be one of your students. On many challenging days, your bubbly personality and graceful smile were so uplifting. You will be greatly missed, but haven have gained an angel.

First year at Stockbridge high school. New girl to computer class. She welcomed me in with this big ol smile and said welcome you must be Ms. Smith. I replied yes. She told me I could sit anywhere I sat in the front right by the door of course. She always made sure I was comfortable and was taking in the knowledge she was teaching the class. Best teacher ever ! Her warm hugs will be missed. -Lavionica S.

Ms. Gilliam was one of the calmest, gentlest, most pleasant persons I have known. Not only will I remember her for the composure she displayed daily, but also for her rolling bag every morning as she entered the building. I would always tease her about "hearing" her presence before I saw her walking in or out of the building. Gilliam, I know you are resting in peace. L. Walker
Ms. Gilliam, I will miss our short talks in passing. We would always talk as we passed each other often times in the parking lot and as we served on morning duty. You had such a peaceful, calm spirit. I appreciated the spirit of peace that you shared with me. This helped me more than you know. Although you are no longer with us in the physical, I strongly believe that your peaceful, spirit will live on through the many people you encountered. Gilliam, I will go for now and let you get your rest. REST WELL, my sister. Praying that we will meet again. Love, Cador.

I am so glad we are friends. You tried to keep me organized and looking like a decent teacher. Regardless of your motion sickness, riding school buses,to accompany the HOSA crew on every conference. Your beautiful spirit reflected in your amazing daughters. The gentleness and care you give to your students, it is easy to understand when meeting your mother. I hear your walk as you approach my door with the rolling bag saying,"it's Atime to go". See you later, sweet friend.Freda
Words are not enough to describe this wonderful person. Deb was a great friend and coworker. There was never a time that I would go to her with some department project that she was unwilling to help. She helping reignite our chapter for National Technical Honor Society and ran the WBL program so well. The 400 hall will and already have missed her presence. Rest well Deb. We love you and will miss you.

Deborah and I would always ride together to WBL Region meetings. She always talked about her Mom, girls and her grands. I've truly missed her and my prayers are with her family.
Your strength and beauty internally and externally were beyond measure! You not only passed on a legacy to two magnificent daughters, but you made a major impression upon me. You often teased me and said that I was your "third" child; which suited me fine! And it still would!
Girl, I feel we covered it all and yet we didn't cover enough! But I trust God and we shall soon run and shop the "streets of gold" together again! Love and miss you best friend!!! Terri
