Collette Ernestine Dorsey Ashiru, 62, of North Chesterfield, after living a faith filled and full life, departed this life quietly in her home on December 1, 2023 under the care of her devoted family members and her caregiver. She was born in 1961 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina to the late Rev. Matthew P. and Billie A. Dorsey.
Collette grew up in both Beaufort (Carteret County) and Washington, North Carolina. She loved the coast and enjoyed keeping in touch with her Beaufort family and friends. Collette received her foundation in Christ Jesus at an early age as a member of Purvis Chapel AME Zion in Beaufort and later Metropolitan AME Zion in Washington. Both churches were formerly pastored by her father. Locally Collette was a member of Zion Chester AME Zion Church. She loved the Lord and with her beautiful voice she loved to sing God’s praises. Collette shared His word to encourage others.
She graduated from East Carolina University, with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work in May 1985 and completed her Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2006. “Go Rams”! Collette worked 30 plus years for the Commonwealth of Virginia in service to others. Her passion was always to ensure that individuals with disabilities and seniors received the specialized care that they needed and deserved. Collette retired from the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services as a Quality Improvement Program Specialist in January 2020. Prior to her retirement, Collette worked as a Professional Medical Social Worker for both Johnston Willis and John Randolph Hospitals, where she remained until August 2022. Collette loved serving patients in the hospital environment and worked diligently to ensure the best possible outcomes upon their discharge. In her free time she volunteered as an elder friend and kept in contact with family and friends. She was always so enthusiastic about sharing a meal with you, preferably in her home, where she was the hostess extraordinaire! Collette, “Cokopuff”, as she was affectionately called, was an avid sports enthusiast and a devoted VCU Rams fan. She lovingly touched the lives of numerous people in so many ways. Collette always left you with her signature mantra, “Love You More!”
In addition to her parents, Collette was also preceded in death by her babies, Little Collette, Jordan Cicely and Matthew Emmanuel and her special “sister”, Iris Harris.
Left to cherish her memory are her siblings, Volina D. Tyson, Matthew P. Dorsey, Jr., and Leola A. Dorsey, all of Washington, North Carolina; Michelle Collins (Alfred) of Havelock, North Carolina; Rhonda Robinson of Durham, North Carolina; Annie Moore (Alton) of Chester, Virginia; Gilbert C. To Collette's family and close friends. My deepest condolences on Collette's sudden illness and passing. I am a former co-worker (at 2 agencies) and friend. I learned an invaluable lesson because of our dear Collette. I am thankful to her. Even when we cannot understand God is always in control. I believe Collette knew this and is at peace. In prayer for your comfort. Esther Forrest Hines
Collette, just what can I say. ❤️ Yes a heavy heart is an understatement. My family loved, and still do thank you for the way you helped others, all the while you were going through life yourself. Thank you for being a great friend to my aunt Iris Harris and her son and daughter. You had the best heart, kind words and ridiculous compassion for people. Sleep well my friend, until we meet again. We love you! The Harris, the Gross family's and her niece Sharon. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
My sincere condolences to The Dorsey family for the loss of your sister.
I remember when Reverend Matthew P. Dorsey came to Beaufort to lead the Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church Family. Not only did the Dorsey family become members of the Purvis Chapel family, they also became members the Beaufort Ohana. So all of us have lost a sister. We grew up from kids to teenagers to adults. It was a sad day when Reverend Dorsey was transferred to Washington, NC.
Even in her job, she was a very friendly person. Collette was doing an assessment at one of my Virginia Beach neighbors' job. Collette told my neighbor that she had spent much of her childhood in Beaufort. My neighbor glowed about how nice she was. That's the Collette I will always remember.
God Bless, Joey Peterson
I met our beautiful Collette approximately 30 years ago when I was introduced to her and a team of colleagues during a surprise state dept. medical records audit at our local CSB. What could have easily become a contentious and conflictual confrontation ended up being the most pleasant, productive and professional interaction I'd ever had with QI and licensing specialists (smile). I quickly and easily became quite fond of Collette; always looked forward to her site visits throughout the years (not a typical reaction to those kinds of situations). As the encounters increased, our bond easily strengthened. We learned early on that we shared similar philosophies, values and priorities as fellow MSW's and women of faith. Years later we saw each other less (due to organizational changes and our taking on different roles within our respective agencies), but we were fortunately able to reconnect shortly before Collette announced her early retirement. We'd vowed to keep in touch, but life (and the pandemic) got in the way. It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to such a kind, genuine and caring soul. Rest in peace, our dearest Collette. May God provide strength and comfort to Collette's family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. -Regina Smith
It was my pleasure to work with Collette during her final years at DBHDS. She could be such fun and I so appreciated her dedication to those less fortunate. We had many good laughs and I will remember her beautiful smile!
May her family be comforted by their memories and find peace in the promise of the resurrection. Debra Vought
My heart and mind grieves because my beloved is no longer with us and has gone home to be with the Lord. It does give me solace however, to know that you are at peace! My dear friend for over 40 years, CoCo was always a loyal and loving friend with a sincere and beautiful spirit🙏🏾 She will be surely missed and until we meet again my friend, I still, will 'love you more.' 🙏🏾🥲‼️ Joyce G. I remember when Reverend Dorsey and his family moved on Van Norton Street in Washington North Carolina. That's when I first met Colette. She was always smiling with those big dimples. The last time I talked to her was at Virginia Beach she was still smiling those big dimples. She would truly be missed, but not forgotten. Smooches Linda Pearl

I don't promise to dye my hair on time but I do promise to smile more, laugh more, DANCE more, live more in her honor! My beautiful sister lived life to the fullest, made long lasting friendships and loved so deeply. She met the challenges of her illness with grace, faith and fierce independence! Because of her "I won't complain!" I just have to learn how to do this without Cocopuff and to do that I will need to be more like her and lean on His everlasting love! Thank you family and friends for supporting Collette in her final journey! Love you MORE!

I worked with Collete, and did not know her for a really long time, but the minute I met her I knew she was special! I honestly think she was an angel already sent down from heaven! I have never met a sweeter, more caring, and more upbeat person!! I would put Bruno Mars on in the office, and she would immediately start dancing!! I love this woman with all my heart! She is a sister to me, and always will be!!! The heavens are brighter because she is there and the earth is a better place because she was here!! Rest in peace, my friend!!!!
