Charles Sylvester Carr, the seventh child of the late George and Bessie Rucker Carr was born May 18, 1927 in Davidson, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Eula, Joyce, Doris, Ada and Thelma and six brothers, Doc, Lewis, Edward, Clyde , James and Pete.
He received his formal education in the public schools of Davison, North Carolina. After graduation, he attended Shaw University in North Carolina. He joined the United States Army in 1949. He worked several jobs approximately four years, stationed in Alaska and a Medic in the Military. He received an Honorable discharge in 1953. Charles accepted Christ as his personal Savior and became a member of Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Arthur Crayton. Charles worked as a bookkeeper while attending Business College in New York. He also drove trucks and Taxi Cabs. He fulfilled his dream, owning his own business, a Variety Store for twenty-six years and sold it in 1992. He loved everybody and was a kindhearted person. He donated to various causes. He created a Scholarship Fund in the name of his grandson, Tyrus Carr, who preceded him in death. He gave to those who didn’t have, like purchasing shoes and coats for children in need. He never talked about what he did for people. He and his wife sponsored Annual Easter Egg Hunts for the children in the neighborhood. Charles loved all of his siblings. They would get together and cooked food and went on trips having a great time. Later, he relocated to Brooklyn, New York where he met and married the love of his life, Rosa Lee Houston on February 12, 1956. This union was blessed with four children. Two children preceded him in death, Angela J. Carr and Carolyn Morales and a grandson, Brandon Morales. In 1997, he relocated to Manning, South Carolina and became a member of Little Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Eddie Davis where he attended until his health declined. On Monday, September 27, 2021, Charles Sylvester Carr entered into eternal rest at Parkland Nursing Home, Columbia, South Carolina. He leaves to cherish his loving memories, a loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Rosa Lee Carr of Manning, SC; one son, Roderick Carr of Goldsboro, NC; two daughters, Joyce L. Holmes of Brooklyn, NY and Marissa Harris of Buffalo, NY; a daughter-in-law, Jeaanie Carr; a son-in-law, Victor Morales; five granddaughters, Marquia, Tracy, Naiyma, Shanice and Joylyn; a special grandson reared as his own, Jalen “JJ” Hudson; additional grandsons, Christopher, Ricky Jr., Tristan, Terrell, Terrance, William and Shawn; thirteen great granddaughters, Faith, Makiah, Aniyah, Ari, Tamia, Gabby, Aaliyah, Jayden, Jaleah, Laila, Amirih, Alexa and Kacia; seven great grandsons, Marcus, Braylen, Princeton, Kam, Devin, Blake, Preston and Makai; a goddaughter, Vanessa Toyer and Donna; six brothers-in-law, Calvin Houston, Charles Houston, James Murray, Tom (Henrietta) Wallace, Clifton (Elvira) Wallace and Joseph Simon; eight sisters-in-law, Ann Carr, Janie McClain, Reverend Geraldine Houston, Carole Starks, Dorothy Williams, Gail Hilton, Sarah Spencer and Lula Barrow; six special people, James Kendall, George King, Stanley Lemon, Vanessa Wade, Sherry Horton and Gayla Caryle; all his children that called him Poppa C, whom he treated like his own; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Public viewing was held Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 4:00PM til 6:00PM at Hayes F. Samuels, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, SC.
Funeral services were held 2:00 PM Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Hayes F. Samuels, Sr. Memorial Chapel. Pastor Eddie W. Davis, officiating; Pastor Dr. Amelia Bradshaw, assisting. Interment was be held 2:00PM Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd., Columbia, SC.
Due to COVID-19 guidelines, the family is not receiving visitors.
