Manning, SC
On December 4, 2020, Mrs. Carrie Lee Hatfield Pearson, 94, wife of the late Ferdinand Pearson, Sr., departed this life at McLeod Health Clarendon Hospital in Manning, South Carolina. She was born on June 6, 1926 in the Jordan Community of Clarendon County South Carolina to the late James Hatfield and Estelle Stukes Hatfield. Ms. Carrie accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior as a child and served Him faithfully throughout her lifetime. She was practical and perceptive with a soothing ability to put anyone at ease. Interestingly, she also was very candid in sharing whatever was on her mind.
On February 28, 1948 she was united in marriage to the late Ferdinand Pearson, Sr. Committed to this union, she left her childhood church of Union Cypress AME in the Jordan community and became a faithful member of Mount Zion AME Church. There she served on the Senior Choir, as Treasurer of the Missionary Board, a Stewardess and on various special committees. Also she joined the Prince Hall Grant Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star Spring Hill Chapter 263 in 1970 and remained in good standing throughout her life.
Mrs. Carrie became an assembly line worker at Sunbeam Manufacturing Plant in Manning after her last child began grade school. She loved this job but more the friends and acquaintances she met who became a part of her extended family. After more than a decade she later joined her husband in employment at Fort Jackson Army Base in Columbia, South Carolina.
Mrs. Carrie loved welcoming visitors, listening to music, singing hymnals, gardening and preserving foods, and delight in sharing her harvest and finds with others. Growing up in a very strict household taught her the values of discipline and hard work, which she applied to her daily life. And as a very faithful woman, she relied heavily on prayer to sustain her and regularly encouraged others to do so as well.
Along with her late husband, she was a pillar in the community, always open and willing to assist and support whenever a need was recognized. Included in her works were assisting with voter registration, working at polling sites, supporting the bereaved, the disabled, the elderly, widows and opening their home to family and guests.
Mrs. Carrie will be forever known for her sense of humor. She had a comedic gift that was infectious, original and spontaneous. Mrs. Carrie lived a peaceful life to the very end.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jerome Pearson; three sisters, Susie Hatfield, Clara Belle Anderson and Mary Hatfield; and two brothers, Lawrence Hatfield and Willie Hatfield.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory three daughters: Alfreda Pearson Frazier (Paul), Manning, SC; Grace Pearson Waters (Spurgin) Upper Marlboro, MD; Cynthia Felder (Lonzie) Columbia, SC; two sons, Ferdinand Pearson, Jr. (Loretta), Sumter, SC; Timothy Pearson, Upper Marlboro, MD; one sister, Daisy Hatfeld Hilton (Frank), Manning SC; two brothers, Judge Hatfield, Manning SC; Mitchell Hatfield, Philadelphia, PA; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends, caregivers and acquaintances
Funeral services for Mrs. Pearson will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 11, 2020 at Hayes F. Samuels, Sr., Memorial Chapel, 114 North Church St., Manning, SC. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion AME Church Cemetery, Summerton, SC.
