Obituary For Spencer Wiggins, Jr.

The life journey of Spencer Wiggins Jr. began January 8, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the fourth-born child to the union of the late Spencer Wiggins Sr. and Lessie Lee Wiggins.

Preceding him in death were two siblings, Joseph Wiggins and Rev. Isaiah Wiggins.

He accepted Christ at the age of 13 at Greater White Stone Baptist Church pastored by Rev. A.R. Williams during a revival service with Rev. J. W. West as guest evangelist and became a member of New Friendship M.B. Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. W.M. Brown where he was a faithful member and served as a member of the choir. He later joined Pleasant Green Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. S.L. Hampton and later Rev. E.L. McKinney where he served faithfully as a choir member.

Spencer was married early in life to the late Cora Richards and three children were born to this union. In 1972, he moved to Belle Glade, Florida, and married Bennie Mae McCoy. He later moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and was there for a number of years and became a member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and choir member. He and his wife later moved to Hollywood, Florida, where he joined New Birth Baptist Church in Miami, Florida, under the pastoral leadership of Bishop Victor T. Curry. There he served faithfully over thirty years singing in the choir, as a member of the Deacon Board and was also director of the Male Chorus. Spencer was a 1961 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He was a member of the WDIA Teen-Town Singers. His work experience was with Coastal Oil Company of Miami, Florida, as an oil tanker truck driver where he retired. He later put his God-given talent to work by traveling throughout the U.S. singing. He had several record releases with Goldwax Records, Fame Records and Electrophonic Records. He also traveled performing at festivals in London, England, Manchester, England, Madrid, Spain, Porretta, Italy, Tokyo, Japan, etc. Spencer returned to Memphis in 2015 where he joined Mt. Gilead Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop Darryl D. Woodson. He was a faithful member of the choir until his health failed.

Spencer leaves to cherish his memory: four sons, Tyrone Wiggins (Traviata) of Atlanta, Georgia, Dennis Ivory of Memphis, Tennessee, Norris Hamilton of Denver, and Spencer Delaney; four daughters, Tijiuana Wiggins Davis (George) of Atlanta, Georgia, Pauline Wiggins of St. Louis, Missouri, Sherron Wiggins King (Rodney) of Los Angeles, California, and Wanda Cannon of Memphis, Tennessee; two brothers, Clifton Wiggins (Marie) and Percy Wiggins (Mary), both of Memphis, Tennessee; two sisters, Maxine Taylor of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mary Wiggins Williams of Memphis, Tennessee; two step-daughters, Pat Marion (Frank) of Miami, Florida and Cathy Ford (Robert) of Belle Glade, Florida; stepson, Alvin (Mimose) of Miami, Florida; sixteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and his sister-in-law, Betty Wiggins.

The family will receive friends Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 10:00am-12:00noon with a funeral service to begin at 12:00 noon both will be held at Mount Gilead the Cathedral of El-Shaddai 3997 Willowview Ave, Memphis, TN 38111

Interment will be Monday, February 27, 2023 at 12:00noon in Calvary Cemetery, 1663 Elvis Presley Blvd Memphis, TN.
