Robert Lee Greer, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 10, 2020. He was born on July 21, 1938 to the Reverend Manzie A. Greer and Susie (Gray) Greer, both of whom have preceded him in death. He was nurtured by his mother’s unwavering faith in God and the love of family and friends.
Robert took advantage of the gifts given to him by God in academics and athleticism. He graduated in 1956 from Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, TN. While in high school, Robert was an amateur boxer. His success in competitive matches led to an athletic award in boxing. He attended Tennessee State University and in 1960 earned a Bachelor of Arts in History-concentration in teacher licensure. As a student athlete, in his freshman year, he earned a Letter in baseball. In the fall of 1957, Robert was initiated into the Beta Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The Fall ’57 line was named, Magnificent 9.
Upon graduation, Robert left Tennessee and migrated to Chicago, Il with his former wife Mary Taylor Greer. He worked for McGraw Hill Publishing in Educational Sales and achieved the designation of Salesman of the Year. For this distinction, Robert was awarded a commissioned portrait of his likeness. An educator at heart, Robert went to work for the Chicago school system as Social Studies and Special Education teacher. In 1970, he earned a Master Degree in Administration and Supervision. After years of working in the classroom and administration, he retired from the Chicago Board of Education and returned home to Memphis, TN.
Robert will be remembered as a fervent reader, exceptional conversationalist and a student of history. He enjoyed reading biographies and a wide variety of historical texts. Robert, in his retirement, enjoyed golf and spent three seasons of the year on the local golf course and bowled in winter. He enjoyed broadway musical cast recordings with Man From La Mancha being his favorite. Robert started a birthday club with his siblings and rarely missed a Sunday call with his loved ones.
At the time of his transition, Robert was greeted by his parents Manzie and Susie Greer; brother Anthony Greer; sisters Lucille Upshaw and Katie Bess. He leaves to celebrate his memory, his children Vicki Greer and Andrea Greer (Lamont Crawford); grandchildren Deandrea Greer-Thomas (Nathan Burrell), Taylor Crawford, Ronnie Wills and Ellis Crawford; sisters Mertie Mae Shelby (James Shelby), Alberta Christine Wells (Robert Wells, Sr), Joyce Greer Bryant (Kenneth Bryant); a host of cherished nieces, nephews, family and friends.
