John W. Torrence, Jr. was born on November 13, 1958, to John W. and Lillie B. Tate Torrence, who preceded him in death in 2007. He departed this life on October 6, 2023, at Methodist University Hospital.
John accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age at St. Stephen Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend L. L. Love, the late Dr. James A. Adams and his current pastor, Pastor Charles Harvey, Jr.; he was a faithful member until his health declined.
John was a graduate of East High School and was employed by Morrison/Piccadilly Cafeteria for over twenty-five years.
John was a quiet, kind, and calm person who loved his family, friends and church family. His kind spirit allowed him to adjust to his care home family and caregivers. He enjoyed watching western movies, wrestling and other sports.
John leaves to cherish his precious memories, his two sisters, Patricia A. Parker and Lilly Gale Ray (Carl); five aunts, Rose Fitchpatrick, Jessie Stone, Iola Haggins, Everlena McNezer, and Clara Watson; and two uncles, Roosevelt Tate and Rozelle Tate; four nieces, Nicole Stamps Wright (Robert), Carla M. Ray, Tunja R. Torrence, and Tiffany G. Parker; two nephews, Travis G. Parker and Desman J. Ray; five grandnieces, Vernice Beckwith, Denise Wyley, Summer Hickman, Maiya K. Phillips, and Tiara Parker Anderson; three great-grandnephews, Jeremiah Taylor, Labryan Washington, Jr., and LaDerrion Washington; and a host of cousins and friends. He also leaves his care home roommates, Mr. Carl Rosser and Mr. Ronald Boone; special caregivers, Tamekia Scott Taylor, Patricia Johnson and Mia Couch; and family friend and neighbor, Marilyn Maxwell.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Brenda “Berta” (1997) and Johnnie Marie (2022); two brothers, Randolph (2003) and Tony (2011); and his brother-in-law, Thomas (2007).
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control,
will transform our bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. -Philippians 3:20-21 (NIV)
John, the loving brother of Lilly Ray and Pat Parker, will always be remembered for just that and much more!
The family will receive friends Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 10:00am-10:55am with a funeral service to follow at 11:00am both will be held at St Stephen Baptist Church 4245 Singleton Pkwy, Memphis, TN 38128
Interment will be in Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery, 3645 Forest Hill Irene Rd, Germantown, TN 38138
