James Kevin Flagg was born on February 11, 1963. He was blessed to be reared in the home of Christian parents, Isabel and Royal Flagg and a loving sister, Vivian Flagg Russell.
Kevin accepted Christ at an early age at Metropolitan Baptist Church and was baptized by Dr. Samuel A. Owen. He was very active in Sunday School, Youth Fellowship, Youth Choir, Baptist Training Union, Youth Usher Board, and Boy Scouts. His summers were spent in Vacation Bible School and Youth Encampment. Kevin competed and won local contests that qualified him to participate in the Mid-South Fair Youth Talent Contest. He also competed and won awards in several contests sponsored by The 4-H Club.
Kevin received his formal education at St. Thomas Elementary, Father Bertrand Catholic School, and Southside High School. He was a proud Southside High School graduate in the Class of 1981. Subsequently, Kevin attended LeMoyne-Owen College and received a degree in Biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1985. While at LeMoyne- Owen College, Kevin pledged the Beta Xi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He received his Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Southern New Hampshire University.
Most recently in Dallas, Texas, Kevin found acceptance, love and encouragement while being involved with Greater Ebenezer Missionary Bible Church under the leadership of Rev. Anthony and Mrs. Marie Brown. His involvement with the members gave him encouragement. Sister Rose Solomon and Sister Barbra Grant were his biggest boosters. On many different occasions, they volunteered to assist Kevin at his job for various events. Their support was invaluable.
Kevin found his calling in social services. He first realized this calling while working at the Pillsbury House as the Health Educator in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was privileged to work directly with Executive Director Peggy Brewer who supported him in his efforts. She also became a dear friend and the relationship continued through the years. In Dallas, Texas, Kevin continued his work with non-profit organizations such as City Square, Shared Housing, and most recently Community Housing Resource Partners.
Cherishing his memory and legacy are his dear and devoted sister: Vivian Flagg Russell (Floyd); nephew: Joshua Russell; cousins: Kathy McPike and Toni Garrison; Godmother: Christine C. Johnson, God-brother William (Billy) Jones, Jr.; and God-sister: Renee Jones-Jeffery.
Kevin was fortunate to be surrounded by loving friends and supporters: The Coburn Family, Christal Cater, Sylvester Mayes, and Phil Lewis. Kevin was preceded in death by several pivotal people in his life his parents: Royal and Isabel Flagg. dear life-long friend: Chucky Harris, cousins: Rodney J. Lott and Queen Harris; Godfather: Carl Johnson, Sr; and God-sister: Delores Coburn.
Kevin had a host of loving family members and friends in Michigan, Texas, and Tennessee.
The family will receive friends Saturday, January 13, 2024 for a Celebration of Life at Metropolitan Baptist Church 767 Walker Ave, Memphis, TN 38126
Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, 824 S Dudley St, Memphis, TN 38104

Although miles keep us apart...If I've learned anything down through the years, it's that nothing beautiful in this world is ever really lost. Those we cherish will always live on in our hearts and memories. Aunt Charlotte, Dossie, Alfred, Valerie Reed.
Kevin is my cousin by marriage. He was also my friend, and I valued our friendship. He will be sorely missed.
