Obituary For Mrs. Nicole Todd-Thomas

Mrs. Nicole Todd-Thomas a resident of Montgomery, AL, passed March 9, 2025. Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 22, 2025, from Old Elam Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Nicole “Nikki” Venecia Todd-Thomas entered this world on Father's Day, Sunday, June 17, 1984 to the union of Otis Lee Todd, Sr. and Shirley Anne Broadnax Todd (deceased), as the third child. On the day she was born, her loving brother Otis (6 years old) looked her over and proclaimed to everyone in the area that he wanted a brown-skinned brother not the light-skinned little sister. Despite his early assumptions, that little light-skinned sister stole his heart (as well as everyone she ever met) and he became her personal Super Hero.

Born into a musical family, Nikki was introduced to singing at an early age. Due to her and her sister’s inability to “behave” during Sunday worship, they would often “accompany” their mother, grandmother and aunt in the choir stand during worship service while attending South Decatur Street Baptist Church. This experience only further developed her love for music. Later at Revelation Missionary Baptist Church, Nikki accepted Christ at 7 years old and was baptized by her uncle, Reverend (Dr.) Willie. G. Broadnax. During her years at Revelation, Nicole became one of the founding members of The Angelic Young Voices of Praise. She was also an active member of the Youth Usher Board, The Sunbeams, the Pastor's Aide Committee and many other organizations. As a young girl, Nicole was eager to display her many gifts and she did so often as she participated in Christmas and Easter Programs by acting, giving recitations and singing. In her late teens, Nicole became one of the Charter Members of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. At NBC she was an active and ever faithful member of the Youth, Adult and Mass Choirs, the Arie G. Kelly Youth Department, Pastor's Aide Committee and a host of other groups and activities. Her final walk with God took place at her beloved Old Elam Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully hand-in-hand with her loving husband, Reverend Wesley Jerome Thomas whom she United in Holy matrimony on September 5, 2018. At Old Elam “the Beacon on the Hill” she spread her wings joining organizations and found her calling working with the church’s youth whom she treasured and spoke of often, as well as becoming a member of the Matrons and becoming Trustee Board member, a position she loved!

Nikki matriculated through the Montgomery Public School System, attending Vaughn Road Elementary, Cloverdale Junior High School and graduated Sidney Lanier High School in 2002. As a teenager, Nikki was a member of the singing group "Mahogany", with childhood friends LaTisha Simpson-Shelton and Jasmine Simpson as well as her sister Jessica “Christy”. Together they performed at functions and recorded a demo thanks to their supportive mothers. Nikki received lessons in piano under the tutelage of Ms. Jacqueline Herring and participated in several recitals during her early years. During her Junior and High School years, she further enhanced her musical skills by learning to play the clarinet.

Nikki briefly attended The Alabama State University, but left her studies to pursue other interests. Though life took Nikki on many journeys, continuing her education was always part of her quest. During 2023 and 2024 Nicole continued her studies at Walden Universities online pursuing a degree in Child Psychology. Unfortunately, due to her declining health Nikki was forced to pause her studies, hoping to resume again in the near future...

Nikki was a life-long child advocate. She spent many years helping her mother nurture the lives of youth her mother would often foster. After her baby brother Semajion was born, her love of nurturing youth took full flight. Throughout her life, Nikki took countless children under her wings, providing love, support, guidance and stability. After the demise of her mother, Nikki became the mother figure for her beloved “twin” Semajion “Semi” or as she often referred to him, her “mini-me”. The love she had for her “mini-me” was so great it would often overflow to those around him. Nikki would often volunteer with every team Semi was a part of. She would coach, run errands, shuttle players home and assist with the guidance of his teammates; most of all she encouraged him and his teammates to BALL OUT!

Nikki was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes as a young teen. Although her diagnosis was a shock to a talkative and energetic young Nikki, her diagnosis never restrained her from anything she wanted to do. Her love for life, people and adventure drove her determination to take the lemons life had thrown her way to make the best strawberry lemonade possible, and maintain being a beacon for many. Nikki lived her life unapologetically and left this world with no stones unturned. She left it all on the field! Neither diabetes, heart complications or renal failure could make her quit. She fought hard and had come-back after come-back until finally God healed her by calling her home.

Nicole "Nikki" Venecia Todd-Thomas transitioned to her Heavenly home Sunday, March 9, 2025 surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Anne Broadnax Todd; grandmothers, Mrs. Jessie M. Broadnax and Rosa Glaze Todd; grandfathers, Leon “Goodshane” Broadnax and Wendsor Todd, II; three uncles, Anthony Todd, Robert E. Broadnax, Sr. and Jerry J. Todd, Sr.; and one aunt Teresa Todd Carter.

It is with Our Deepest Sympathy and Heartfelt sadness that we learned of Nicole's passing away. Nicole was such a sweet young lady. She and Our daughter was school friends and our daughter would bring Nicole over to our house. She had such a pleasant spirit. In later years she received medical care and the same Facility as my husband. Whenever, I would see her, she would always give me a big smile regardless of how sick she was feeling at that time. She would still be so polite. Praying for her family that God will strengthen each of you during this time of sorrow. Eddie and Cynthia German, Montgomery, AL
