His family later moved to Memphis, TN where Don completed his formal primary and secondary education and graduated from Manassas High School. Don received Christ at an early age and was baptized at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee.
Don later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he met and married the love of his life, Ollie M. Coleman. The two joined as one in holy matrimony and remained faithful to each other for fifty-three years. Two children were born to their union.
In his early years of living in Milwaukee, Don followed his family legacy of entrepreneurship. He was a cab owner and operator. He later managed a home-based upholstery business for many years. Don attended Milwaukee Area Technical College and was certified as a master upholsterer. He received an honorary retirement distinction after 27 years of service at WE Energies.
Don was a leader and a hard-working family man who was also dedicated to serving in his church. In December 1989, Don and his family became members of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1997, he was recommended to become a Deacon of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church Deacon Board and participated in the Deacon Training course. Upon completing the requirements of the training, he was installed as an official member of the Zion Hill MBC Deacon Board. Don carried out responsibilities of Deacon dutifully and faithfully and was well respected by the congregation at-large. He had a great passion for the study of the Bible and attended Bible classes regularly. For a number of years, he was an instructor for the youth and children’s Bible classes. He was also actively engaged in the administration of the Sunday School, served as youth Sunday school superintendent, and taught Sunday School classes.
Don was fond of southern living, and after 35 years of raising a family in Milwaukee Wisconsin, he retired, and he and Ollie relocated to Montgomery, AL and joined the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Walter E. Ellis. He served as an usher and regular Sunday school attendee. He also served faithfully with the prison ministry. After he retired, Don started an insurance business, and managed Currie Insurance Agency.
